Same here in the foothills of Tennesse. Guess I need to get the gun out and grease'r up and make sure we get the land mines all planted in the front yard, board up the windows and black out the lights just in case.

There will be Troops marching in the streets within a week, and all the banks will close.

That seems a bit unlikely, but as long as they don't mess with this forum....:)

But from an earlier post....

Okay Gang It looks like I am not as smart as I “thung” I was.

....can't argue with that....:)

You just doing that? Been doing that for years here (live on the border of Detroit).

When did it cease being Armistice Day and become Veterans Day? I, of course, am a veteran so I celebrate that as well as the Marine Corps birthday.

The Marine Corps, 233 years of tradition, unmarred by progress. :D

My father being born on 11/11/19 always considered it as his birthday.....

So he was an Armistice baby who is also a veteren.

1919

November 11: President Wilson proclaims the first Armistice Day with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country’s service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations…" The original concept for the celebration was for the suspension of business for a two minute period beginning at 11 A.M., with the day also marked by parades and public mettings.

1921

Congress passes legislation approving the establishment of a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Arlington National Cemetery. November 11 is chosen for the date of the ceremony. According on October 20, Congress declares November 11, 1921 a legal Federal holiday to honor all those who participated in the war. The ceremony was conducted with great success

1938

Congress passes legislation on May 13 making November 11 a legal Federal holiday, Armistice Day. The United States has no ‘actual’ national holidays because the states retain the right to designate their own holidays. The Federal government can in fact only designate holidays for Federal employees and for the District of Columbia. But in practice the states almost always follow the Federal lead in designation of holidays.

1941- 1945

1950- 1953

World War II and the Korean War create millions of additional war veterans in addition to those of the First World War already honored by Armistice Day.

1954

On June 1, President Eisenhower signs legislation changing the name of the legal holiday from Armistice Day to Veteran’s Day.

Thank you very much. I didn't know that. And I probably should have since I was alive during Eisenhower's term.

Very interesting.

During WWII my father was a ship builder in San Francisco (draft exempt) and my mother was in the Marine Corps. So that old line, "Your mother wears combat boots." actually applied to me. :D

The ironic part of the Armestice, which was basically a cease fire, allowed combatant parties time to negotiate the Treaty of Varsailles. Since it was a treaty and not a surrender, it was basically a frail documnent without many teeth, that was shortly side stepped and then ignored by the vanquished parties. This allowed the eventual build up of power by the NAZI party in Germany, their uncheck re armament, and the actions that subsequently lead to WW II. One wonders what would have happened if a stonger, more fair document and more vigilent oversight might have led to.

President Wilson and Colonel House, his personal advisor wrote up a very fair treaty, which was ignored by the euros who wanted blood for blood.

I can see their point, but it sure backfired on them. Europes been carved up so many times everybodys got some sort of feud going on.

PS. Hitler found the train car that the treaty was signed on and made France sign their surrender on it during WWII.

I honestly do not think more oversight would have prevented WWII and the rise of Nazism. The terms of Germany's surrender and the damage that occurred left the average German clamouring for "Change" and it matter not who is offering "Change," where promised "Prosperity" comes from, or how one accomplishes "Peace." When the average human being is suffering and struggling to stay alive, most will vote for it no matter who is actually offering without questioning. WWII, IMHO, was merely the continuation of WWI. It matters not that Adolph Hitler was Prime Chancellor. A dictatorship seeking empire is a dangerous thing no matter what the promises. We forget that Adolph Hitler and the Nazis were elected in open and free elections with universal suffrage.

Actually, I don't think either of the majour parties and the people they elect could really care about us as antique car enthusiasts. We are an easy scapegoat. In all actuality, I am no more vigilant or less so, just because Barack Obama is in the White House, Nancy Pelosi is Speaker of the House, Joe Biden Senate President, or Harry Reid is Senate Majourity Leader. Until we start electing and supporting representatives that are willing to be a pain in the neck about individual liberties and personal property rights, voting for Republicans or Democrats will not protect our cars from those that wish us ill-will. There is really little to no difference between the majour political parties in these united States.

Until we have elected officials with the courage and wisdom of Davy Crockett and Thomas Jefferson, we are pretty much screwed. The best we can hope for is that we as individuals project a positive image about ourselves and our hobby so that the local government chooses to leave us alone because we are good guys rather than zeroing in on us because we are jerks.

Captian Neon,

Ditto,

Politicians will never effect me driving my antique car.

I will do it anyhow, and unless they catch me red handed many times

over (because of all the namby pamby laws on our books) I shall probably

live out my life doing so. I live in the country and catching me at 6:00 AM

on a Saturday or Sunday morning will probably proove next to imposible.

I choose to do it - all their laws be damned. It doesn't matter who is president, congressman, senator, mayor etc..

They do not effect my thinking, and I will never kow tow to a bunch of

parasites such as these. There now I feel better, and if the rest of us antique car owners feel the same that would be a liberating feeling rather than feel like a handful of idiots control our lives.
