Don Jordan Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Wouldn't it be great if there was a forum like this for life? Every time you had a problem you just write it down and a bunch of old guys give you the answer. But alas... so on to a solvable problem. My car had been sitting out in the desert for about 25 years before I bought it. I got it home and just to play it safe I took the tank off and had it boiled out and coated. That was probably about 10 years ago. I looked under the car and the tank was leaking. All I can guess is it is rusting between the tank and the coating. Is this something that can be saved or would it be better to just get a new tank? And the final question is who has new tanks? Right now my car is up on blocks and the weather is perfect for a ride. Plymouthy Adams Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 actually if the unit has gone through one repair/reseal and is now leaking..I think I would be very apt to buy either of the three tanks now available for use..steel, stainless steel or poly tank...they do work with only the slight owner intervention for mod/adapting...to find a good original is hard and expensive if you do meet with success... Frank Elder Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 I got a wonderful tank, steel, from PLYDO. But the man has passed and I don't know if anyone has carried on. It is a universal tank and straps were xtra but it works fine with a O'Reilly's universal sender in it. Doe's anyone make an original reman? Quote
NatesSedan Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Tanks Inc. makes in Stainless. It will take some modiication to the old sending unit however to make your gauge work. It is a nice unit and easy to install. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Pricey...better know as "Pay to Play" Quote
Jim Saraceno Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Just throwing this out there. I just had a leak in my gas tank and come to find out, it was not from the tank, it was leaking from the sending unit. Dropped the tank, took the sending unit apart, made new gaskets, reassembled everything and all was well. Quote
RobertKB Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Never did and never will like any kind of sealant in a gas tank. As others have commented there are new ones out there. Occasionally the originals appear on ebay. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 You don't have to pay the price of a stainless tank from Tanks Inc. You can also get a steel one cheaper from them. I agree with the others. Today it's better to just buy a new tank than mess around with the old one. 25 years ago you didn't have options, but today you do, so why not use them and get a nice new one. I have a Poly tank from PlyDo on my coupe. But as someone mentioned, don't know if they are open for business now. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Ply Do did not make this stuff..he was only a reseller of merchandise.. Quote
Olddaddy Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I agree with the idea that in this case new is better, unless you are a stickler for original restoration. I spent a great deal of money repairing my Suburban tank, over $300. A year later it was leaking again. I spent just over $200 having an aluminum tank made and gained about 2 gallons in the deal. For a driver I would never spend a dime repairing an original tank. Disclaimer, Free advice is worth what you pay for it. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Ply Do did not make this stuff..he was only a reseller of merchandise.. I knew that, but you also have to find the other people selling the same tank. They have poly tanks in JC Whitney's catalog. However, it doesn't list one for the P15, and the pictures in the catalog doesn't show the one PlyDo sold me. So, unless I could see a picture of the one I got I wouldn't know which one matched the one I got from PlyDo. Quote
NatesSedan Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 The Tanks Inc. are pricey. $350 for the stainless and $250 for steel alloy. I bought mine from a local supplier who sells almost at cost and I picked up the stainless for $275 or so if I remember correctly. I figure with a stainless tank I wont ever have to think about it again in my lifetime. I was so frustrated with the original tank that $350 seemed like a bargain to just be done with it. It came with new straps but I use the original hardware. I did have to have the dual exhaust rerouted (rather creatively I might add) to make it fit. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 Actually, Tanks Inc. prices don't sound that bad to me. Before Tanks Inc. came along a couple of people got new stainless tanks from Rock Auto and paid about $600 each. Even my poly tank from PlyDo was about $250 after the shipping charges were added onto the price. Think the tank itself was about $225. I would have gladly paid the price for a steel one if I could have gotten it back then. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 not trying to be a smarty or anything but the words typed into the search line on yahoo... replacement poly tank for early plymouths gets you the seller on the second address....it is merely as easy as typing in what you are looking for... Tim, That's if you have the internet. I actually bought my poly tank BI (before I had the internet) back in the late 90's. Quote
Norm's Coupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 What would be even easier is a link (for those who care to "link", or don't "yahoo") I googled, didn't help much Hmmmmmmmm...........I missed that one. I don't do Yahoo either. Actually, I may have had the internet when I bought my tank. But.........back in the late 90's not too many people sold aftermarket stuff for Plymouth. So.......it may not have been so easy to find anyway, except through someplace like PlyDo. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I'm going to go out on a limb here and guess that anyone reading this forum has the internet in some form. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 personally I don't do google..it brings back too much trash..to many things that really are not pertinent to your search,.,.now don't get me wrong..if all you got is time to play on the internet google will give way more than you ask for to keep you occupied...but for a quick in and out..Yahoo me every time.. busycoupe Posted October 20, 2008 Report Posted October 20, 2008 I had my tank repaired by a local radiator/fuel tank shop this June. For $200 he repaired a crack in the top corner of the tank, reattached the filler neck, cleaned the tank and tested it. I looked into getting a Tanks Inc. tank but it would have cost over $250 and I would have to mess with it some to fit in the sender and attach the fuel line. I knew that my tank would fit right back in with no problem. -- So far it is working great! I would check into having your tank repaired, if it is not corroded on the inside. Quote
Don Jordan Posted October 21, 2008 Author Report Posted October 21, 2008 Actually the tank has been boiled out but it is rusting... I have called Tanks Inc and the local franchise is going to call me tomorrow. I saw a picture on the Tank web site - what they have listed for a 48 Plymouth just doesn't look right. Tomorrow I'm taking it to a radiator shop to see if they can cut the rust out for under $200. If it cost more I might as well get a new one. I was thinking of going to my favorite junk yard but then again you have no idea what you're getting. That's why I like old cars - because nothing is ever easy. d- Quote
daddyo23 Posted October 21, 2008 Report Posted October 21, 2008 I found I need a tank, too. Dropped mine as I'm going through the car and it was leaking. Found the old repair, big fiberglass patch with some sort of sealer along the seam. Guess it didn't hold too well. Tried the yahoo thing, they didn't show one for our cars. Wayne P. Quote
