Uncle-Pekka Posted September 28, 2008 Report Posted September 28, 2008 ...The (not original) flatty and fluidrive will separate from my car. I just bought 3.9L V-6 Mopar magnum and 5-speed from Miami, and those will be shipped to northern Finland... Oh Brother, wh're are thou'... Who am I to judge your deeds (how ever hideous they may be...) Anyway, what about the original parts to be tossed? Will you part with the engine you are going to pull out? Sincelery, Pekka the Vulture Quote
Fireball Posted September 28, 2008 Author Report Posted September 28, 2008 Pekka San, I'm not sure yet whether I'll keep the original parts or sell them. But you and Pena are first to know if I get rid of them. And everything is working and useful if you guys need something, let me know. Quote

Tim Frank Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 Exactly my thoughts Don....nary a bit of gratuitous violence or hanky-panky, it's all Mopar all the time! Oh well, Desperate Housewives is on in 1/2 hour, maybe I can tune that in.... Quote
falconvan Posted September 29, 2008 Report Posted September 29, 2008 I used the same rearend in my 48. I did notice that ring and pinion sets were a little pricier for the 8.25. But you're right, it fit like a glove. Your 3.9 should be a great economy/power setup. How about a couple of pics? I'm using a 5.3 Gen III Chevy in mine. Quote
Fireball Posted September 30, 2008 Author Report Posted September 30, 2008 I already found Aspen 8 1/4 rear quite near, 170 miles up in North pole. Width is only 1.5" less than original. I'm now also wondering would I be able to make Aspen/Volare front hubs and discs to fit my '46 Dodge spindles since the same guy has them for sale also. It seems that over Plymouth spindles they fit (oldaddys kit) but what's the difference with Dodge. falconvan, my motor+tranny are in shipping terminal in Ft lauderdale waiting for suitable container to Finland where to throw them in. So pics wil follow later. Your morecylinder looks nice! Quote
Uncle-Pekka Posted October 4, 2008 Report Posted October 4, 2008 'Ball, You are going to replace the rear axel as well? - check your mail box for p.m. /u-P. Quote
Fireball Posted October 4, 2008 Author Report Posted October 4, 2008 I am, the above mentioned rear was shot, so the hunt continues. Last night I won an PCM from ebay for my transplant, harness still needed. Quote
Savoy Boy Posted October 5, 2008 Report Posted October 5, 2008 Good thread and one I will watch with much interest. The flatty in our 55 Savoy just died and we are seriously looking at using a Supercharged V6 and auto out of a Holden (GM) Commodore. The plan is to use the factory wiring and computer. Connect the original column change shifter up to work the auto. The rear axle will be replaced with a Borg Warner unit as these are readily available here in all sorts of widths, ratios, L.S.D. all bolt patterns and brake options. I have used these in the past and still have a couple of vehicles with these fitted. Quote
Fireball Posted May 8, 2009 Author Report Posted May 8, 2009 Okidoci, after 9 months I finally received my engine and tranny yesterday. Living in Finland really does good to my impatient nature. This is the messy starting point for conversion, and I'll update into this thread whenever this part moves on. I started with placement planning and measuring. I can only use stock co drivers side engine mount, tranny and drivers side have to be custom made. I cut off the original diagonal bar for tranny, and welded together a new one. I had to make couple recesses for the rear mount bolts to reach through. I made this mount bolt-in-off style, to make future tranny removals a snap. Welded sturdy L shape pieces to frame and bolted the bar into those Looks like the whole package fits in nicely, but with the stock steering it appears that a custom headers must be made, there's not too much room on that side even the engine is 1.5" to left. I'd like to get a set of stock manifolds but this motor is so rare in Finland that I doubt to find any. Also finding an yoke for this AX-15 tranny will be a challenge, not even ebay has anything at the moment Quote
Joel Torres Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 (edited) sounds cool it sucks we can't send stuff to you in crates at a cheap cost for you cause then you could buy a donor car here and we cut it up and mail it i wonder what to total weight would be for all the parts in a crate? the only thing you don't need is the body you could be churning out upgraded plymouths all year round:D 9 months waiting for a motor i would go bananas i really think we need to make a shipping business and supply you guys with drugs i mean parts you need send me one of those little mini coopers back in the crate and write return to shipper lol Edited May 8, 2009 by Joel Torres Quote
knuckleharley Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 That's not as unusual as you might think. I just sold a Y-Block Ford engine to a guy in Germany who's going to put a stroker kit in it and swap it into his 39 Ford coupe in place of the 350 Chevy. Those of you who have heard what Y-Blocks with glasspacks sound like will smile when you picture the looks on the faces of the Germans when he nails it. Ain't nothing sounds nastier than a Y-Block Ford with glasspacks. Quote
Young Ed Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 Its been a long time since I've heard one but the 54 Ford Dad had when I was barely a teenager sure sounded nice. Car came with the pieces from a 54 merc needed to install basically factory duals. He used to downshift a lot under the railroad bridges here in town and let it echo. COOL Quote
dndrodshop Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 On the Dodge 5-speed with the hydraulic slave cylinder. I'm making fittings to change from the hard plastic press-on tubing to regular threaded fitting, to use with an aftermarket clutch master cylinder. If anyone is interested. Quote
greg g Posted May 8, 2009 Report Posted May 8, 2009 The only sin will be that of non completion..... Bless you and go in peace and enthusiasm. May Saint Eligius guide you hands in your craftwork. http://saints.sqpn.com/saint-eligius/ Quote
Fireball Posted May 8, 2009 Author Report Posted May 8, 2009 No, swapping the engines is not unusual, I can't even count how many times I've done it during the years myself. Although this is the first trial with modern computerized sequential injected etc. so I think my thumb will end up into my mouth more than once before it's done. Just got the engine mounts done Quote
NatesSedan Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 Great project. We are currently putting a 4 litre inline 6 from a Grand Cherokee into my father in laws '38 Plymouth. Dana rear end as well. Its been alot of fun getting this thing together. We are just getting to the wiring (EZ wire) started and hope to have it back on the road mid summer. The Chrome just came back back from the chromer and woooow does it look good. I think we noticed his tires were low on air pressure one day and next thing you know a new engines going in. Funny how these things happen. LOL Look forward to seeing the progress on your project! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 9, 2009 Report Posted May 9, 2009 Tero...rolled the wagon out today and snapped a few pictures..check your home e-mail I see you are not letting any grass grow beneath your feet now that the engine is in country... Quote
Fireball Posted May 9, 2009 Author Report Posted May 9, 2009 Tim you are marbel, you gave me one measurement and three hours later it was done 5000 miles away. I appreciate this freaking internet every now and then so much that you guys within the civilization have no idea. Trust me, I really benefit the fact that world has "smallen" during the last ten years. Homeoffice connection not allowing me into my work email now Tim, freaking company firewalls, or was it fireballs. Natessedan, what a coinsidence, I have also EZwire set waiting for my puppy to be rewired. Although this build seems to have its own character, new issues landing on my turf faster than I can swallow. The "complete engine and tranny" I bought is actually missing flywheel, throttle body, exh manifolds, couple of sensors, yoke etc. so happy treasure hunting Fireball... Quote
norrism1 Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 (edited) OOPS!! Messed this post up. Edited May 10, 2009 by norrism1 Quote
norrism1 Posted May 10, 2009 Report Posted May 10, 2009 Fireball.. What are you planning for the radiator. Will the original fit ok or will you have to remove the fan and install an aftermarket electric fan? Also for the sake of argument- Is the 3.9 heavier then the flat 6? Will you have to beef up the front or does it look to be level? By the Way,, I had a 98 Dakota and when traded in for 2003 it had 190,000 miles on odometer and no leaks or noises and nothing but temp sensor replaced at about 130,000 miles. Keep the oil and filter changed every 3000 to 4000 miles. Norris Quote
gnoub1948 Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 I've been wrestling with the hole engine thing for a long time. I am assuming that one day I'll get my car completed and it will need a motor. I really want to stay MOPAR, but, I have this 450 horsepower LS6 with comp cam and valve train sitting in my garage with no where to go. So, is a bird in the hand worth two in the bush? Gary Quote

So, is a bird in the hand worth two in the bush?Gary No. No matter how you dress that buzzard up,it's still a Chevrolet. Take it to a Super Chevy show and sell it to some teen with "Mama Money",and then buy yourself a nice 440 to put in it. Quote
Fireball Posted May 11, 2009 Author Report Posted May 11, 2009 Norris, my new setup is definately lighter than the original. As for the radiator I haven't been able to testfit the stock unit yet, but I'll try to get away with it. If not then some modern alu version. If somebody wants to help a foreigner, please grab a driveshaft out of 92-99 2wd standard transmission Dakota with slip yoke from your local junkyard and send it to Finland. I'll pay with Paypal? I haven't been able to find one locally, not even ebay actually. The front yoke is the most critical to find, the rest can be custom made locally. The tranny is AX-15 5-speed manual. Quote
dndrodshop Posted May 11, 2009 Report Posted May 11, 2009 I've been told and maybe someone else can confirm that the yoke is not that specific. The yoke will interchange with many other years of Mopar shafts. Unless someone else has more a definitive answer I will do a little reserach and see if I can verify. Quote
