I'm running stock plug gap with my petronix ignitor on my 283 Chevy in the old truck. Had no problems to date, and it has been running that way for about 10 years.
For the wipers I bought a kit from Newport Engineering. It was about $220, but works great with 12v negative.
If you want to use the stock vacuum motor, getting a vacuum canister will help you a bunch. I bought a small one that was used for cruise control at an auto parts store, don't think it was more than $15-$20.
I put a regular am/fm casette player in the glovebox. Just bolted it to the top of the box. Left room underneath for insurance card, license, etc. Bolted in a big speaker into the original cut out in the center of the dash. All of it is hidden with the glove box door closed and works good.
Went several places this year with the car. Have several destinations planned for 2013 already. Made trips to Jackson, TN, St. Louis, MO, Springfield, IL, and Jackson, TN this year. My favorite photo I took this year is heading north of Jackson cruising with a few friends. Nothing like a highway full of old cars.
Hey Howard, directions say power feed must be a #10. I have had no problems to date. When I installed my dizzy, I just followed the directions Langdon gave, but set the timing a lot less than he suggested. Here are the instructions that come with the unit.
That is aggravating. Just like waking up on Christmas morning to find out Santa doesn't come until later that evening. Doesn't he know this forum is waiting in anticipation?
Looks like those studs are longer than factory. Be careful when removing them as some of the exhaust manifold studs go into the water jackets. I learned that the hard way.
Those other two gaskets looks like exhaust pipe gaskets.
Hey Mark,
I did this same upgrade last winter. Didn't go with headers, but split exhaust manifold from olddaddy. Very happy with it. The only problems I had was getting the exhaust manifold to seal good to the intake manifold. You of course won't have that problem with the headers. I also had to make shift my own linkage. You will discover once you hook up the offy linkage it can be pretty sloppy. I ended up using part of the kit and fabbing up something different for the rest of the linkage. Used a spare original linkage I had and a few pieces from the hardware store to get it fixed.
I bought a two single round air cleaners and doubled up with two filters. Works well and looks good.
The only thing I would have you make sure of is to have a matched set of carbs. That is number wise, such as D6H2. Both my carbs are matching #'s. I had read or heard somewhere that was important, but of course I could be wrong. Others can share their experiences.
I'm always collecting pics of dual carb setups to check out different ideas and experiences.
I bought my first one from Roberts and it was about an inch too short as well. They I bought one from Steele rubber and it fit perfect. Just used 3m weatherstrip adhesive and it seals fine.
Hate it you had to tow it home, but at least you made it home in one piece. Will be checking this thread periodically hoping to learn of what the issue was.
Try the static timing procedure on the main page. When mine wouldn't
start after the distributor was out it resolved my issues. Had to readjust the
distributor setting.
Hey Bob the Coca-Cola cafe at Springfield, MO fairgrounds must be an official
meeting place of forum members, because if I remember right that is where we met as well.
I met Clay Diggs at a show in Piggott, AR about three years ago. We didn't get the "official" picture, but I assure you it happened. Always good folks to meet from the forum.
