With the gaps and holes in the center of the hood they will leak water quite a bit. Young Ed had suggested using a clear silicone bead down the middle of the hood under the molding. I did that last year and it sure helped a bunch. Now 5 and 6 cyl spark plug holes fill up and no more. What I usually do is when I know it will be out in the rain or I wash mine is to put a towel under that back of the hood over the engine. Although I have had to remove the spark plugs and clean the rust off them, as well as repaint the head once this year already.

Yeah got to have a 12 volt solenoid. You should be able to find one at any auto parts store. I think I bought mine at o'reillys. I've been running my original 6V starter with 12V for almost 3 years now. I know others on here have had 6V starter failures with 12V, but so far so good for me. Not to say it will never go out, but as long as it isn't broke, I'm not going to fix it.

Red's headers is where I got my 2 carb intake from. I think he was the cheapest I could find. Langdon apparently doesn't stock that item anymore.

Well after a few frustrating days I got the exhaust leak fixed. Put on a new gasket between the intake and exhaust, as well as filing down the exhaust manifold surface, and using a bit of exhaust cement. Went for a cruise today and had a blast! I really like the way it sounds and it has a bit more power too. I'm going to try to drive it as much as I can the next three weeks before taking the 5 hour drive down to Jackson, TN. I also got a couple of videos today of the drive and how the exhaust sounds. Please excuse the quality of it. I'd pull the head Mark. I had just about the exact same problem two years ago. Found a break in the head gasket between 5 & 6 cyls. Had the head checked to at that point and had to get it shaved off a bit. Was not real straight and warped just a tad. Haven't had any problems since, knock on wood. Car ran real rough and would pop back through the carb on accel. When you have the head off you can check the valves too while you're there.

It should be a neat show again Ed. I was there last year and there were a lot of older cars, mostly street rods, but a lot of different cars. Saw several mopars there as well.

Bump. If the exhaust leak is fixed I will be heading down there in about a month. Can't wait as spring fever has found me. Ready to do some cruisin. Any other folks down there in TN attend this show?

Here's how the exhaust looks from the rear. I'm really happy with it. Can't wait to be able to hear what it sounds like from the back without hearing the noise in the front as well.

Did you put a thicker gasket in there as well Rick? I cleaned the surfaces well, but may have to file it as you say. Did you file off much?

Well back from the exhaust shop yesterday and looks like I've got an exhaust leak. It's up near the manifold and spent some time checking on it today. Seems to be leaking between the intake and exhaust manifolds, at the heat riser. Anybody with offenhauser manifolds have any trouble with these sealing up good with the original exhaust manifold? I put the gasket between them that came in the manifold gasket kit from napa. Seemed to fit well, but looks like I will need to address it again.

Thanks Don. Yeah it did work well. I cleaned out that box that it was shipped in and found the broken off idle/air screw. I guess it just got damaged in shipping. Put a good base on it from a spare carburetor I had and it took care of it. I'm very happy with it.

Well I've been working on a project about a month or so. Decided to add dual B&B's with an offenhauser manifold and then decided to have Charlie Akers (aka Olddaddy) split my exhaust manifold. After I purchased another carb and did a rebuild I was ready to install the setup. Took about two weeks to get the manifold back from Charlie with shipping and all included in the time. He does a great job and I am really happy with the results. I went ahead and used the throttle linkage in the kit and I can see I'm going to have to fine tune it a bit. Has a little too much slack for me. Car fired right up yesterday though after pumping it a bit. It runs really good. Of course it will need to be fine tuned once I get the dual exhaust installed. Hoping to do that this week. There were a few minor modifications I had to make. The bolt holes for the intake to exhaust manifold connection were 5/16" bolts on the exhaust and 3/8" bolts on the new manifold. A 3/8" drill bit and new bolts solved that problem. Had a little trouble with it lining up on the engine studs, but used a wooden block and a rubber hammer once I had it lined up. Tapped it lightly until it lined up and I could bolt it on. Other than that things went pretty well. The information in the offenhauser kit said that studs for the carbs and all necessary hardware were included. I had to make the carb studs out of 3/8" threaded rod and make a bracket for the lower throttle spring. Not sure what experience others have had, but those items were not in the kit. The pieces to make the fuel line in the kit actually worked well. Had to make two flares and bent a couple of lines and it worked out really well. Plus it didn't leak. Which is the most important part. The air cleaners I purchased from summit and just added another filter to each to stack them. Have read about several on here having problems with running rich from the lack of air in the smaller filters. Hopefully I have solved or prevented that problem. Here's some pics. I haven't road tested it yet, but I have about a 1 mile drive to the exhaust shop so I will find out a little bit then. The real fun will be coming back from the exhaust shop. I can't wait! I have two 26" smithy mufflers to put on it and chrome pencil tip exhaust tips. Included some pics of the final results.

Not sure what the state laws are in GA, but you should be able to retain the salvage and keep a good title. In IL you can as long as it is 9 years or older. I'm with Darren, keep the car. I'm sure the cost to keep it will be low and you can have extra parts, or buy a parts car and fix the car you have now. Either way I wouldn't let it go, especially if you are going to get another car like it. You can always use it as a parts car. Hope it all turns out well for you. This scenario is a reminder to me that I need to be sure to increase the agreed value on my car a little bit each year, especially when modifying things, or replacing things on it. Got to protect my investment.

I agree with this as well. I have Hagerty too, and would call them right away and have them take care of my damages. You are their customer and will work hard to make you happy, plus they know antique vehicles and they will give you the best outcome in my opinion. You may wait weeks or months on the tow trucks insurance company to get it all figured out. Hagerty can have it all done and most likely you won't have a deductible with them, and they will just go after the other insurance for the tow truck for you. It should not raise your insurance rates either. It was not your fault. I work for a large auto insurance company as an adjuster and if I ever have an accident, my fault or not, I will be going through Hagerty for my damages.

In Illinois the antique vehicle plates are for vehicles 25 years or older. It states you are to limit the use to club functions, parades, shows, and test drives for maintenance or taking to the the shop. I personally have driven mine quite a bit and haven't been pulled over yet. That may change though as they have passed legislation to offer a higher price AV plate that will allow you to drive your car from April-October pretty much anytime, like a standard plate, but the price is a bit higher. They may start to try to get everyone who doesn't limit their driving to shows, etc. to get the higher priced plate. -
I've done it too. I always set the parking brake, especially with the od, it's a good habit I guess, as long as you remember to release it before you go. Glad the damage was minimal. Looks like you should be okay. I would drive it for a while and see if any new noises develop. Then you will know you might have a problem.

Supposed to get about two inches tonight. Got about an inch so far. With temps back up in the 50's by Thursday it doesn't look like it is going to last long in Southern Illinois either.
