  1. Ed, if you paid for it with a credit card, there is a chance the issuer will honor a guarantee for you. Check with them and see. Sometimes they will cover electronics for a year. Depends on your card company.
  2. It sounds like you're gonna be twisting a lot of 11/16 socket. There's only one way to see under the head. Did you put a little heavy oil in the front two and check it again just to make sure? Changing the head gasket is pretty easy, just an afternoon tinkering. What else ya gonna be doin', shoveling snow like the rest of us?
  3. Didja ever try a bag full of lead shot?
  4. Of course, cats are very sensitive. But if you do it right, they are only sensitive for a second or so.
  5. Just throwing this out there, recheck your point dwell, and see if it helps to close up the spark plug gap a little. Where is your timing set? Try about 5 degrees ahead?
  6. Well, its just another of life's mysteries, I guess. I can imagine how closely you will be listening the first time it runs again. Will you ever be able to relax?
  7. Are there any big dents in the head over that piston? Just curious as it doesn't really matter now.
  8. I have had problems with Champion plugs three times now, One set even had a plug with the insulator in crooked. Each set performed badly from new. These sets were in three different motors. I suspect that Champions are not US made.
  9. If it were my car, I would take them out and throw them as far as I could.
  10. I was just thinking, (insert joke of your choice here), when I had a problem like that, It was corrected by replacing the Champion plugs with Chryco plugs. The Champions were new.
  11. If you're checking in, Robert, know that we are jealous.
  12. I'm glad it worked for you. Sometimes you get lucky. I think that flat spot is supposed to be there so you can slide the key in after you put the hub on.
  13. Now you know why I call autozone "Ozone". Thats where their heads are.
  14. Rodney, a hemisphere is 1/2 of a sphere, domeshaped combustion chamber. A polysphere can be any shape as long as it is a part of a sphere thats all it means, something less than half a sphere. One combustion chamber to a cylinder. I am not a good explainer.
  15. If you are making a small die, less than 1/2" diameter, just cut from the outside right into the center. A larger one can be made by putting the hacksaw blade through the center and then cut into the theads an 1/8" or so.
  16. Definitely on a roll, you have to go back!
  17. I just looked at an old gasket in the garage. Cutting a new one ain't gonna happen., and yes any kind of sealer would only work to seal the tiny passages. The cheapest guy you'll ever meet says spend the money and send off to Ficken.
  18. Thats great, the name is Trico, but the memory isn't nearly as good as yours. The screws should be tight as they are all sealing vaccuum, and the motor will work better without leaks. I have no idea where you could get gaskets, but maybe you could use an RTV gasket maker? You could probably get away with Permatex #2 if the paper isn't torn or shrunken up too badly.
  19. Then he should send it my way. Thank you very much.
  20. I bet Mike will agree that one of the most important things our Dads and Grand dads taught us was to figure out how to do something and then DO it. I like to think that when newer, younger guys ask questions here that I can answer, I'm sort of passing along what was given to me. Keeping old cars going sometimes requires keeping old logic going too. Grampa eventually became a Buick dealer and then the National. I've gotten some great stories from him. Theres the time he drove a Hudson Commodore across a ditch and ,,,,,,,,,,
  21. I am very glad to pass on a "new trick" that was shown to me by my Grampa Shaw who owned Shaw's Garage in Avalon Pa. That was in the teens in the last century. He taught me in the 50's. So, new trick? Sure is. Stick with me, I'll show you cheap.
  22. If I were on the road behind you, I would appreciate the stacks getting the stink away from me. Yes, it does look cool too.
  23. Being "ultra-cheap", I have had success making a thread chaser by cutting a slot in the right size nut and threading it on and off several times using plenty of oil. For small nuts, I just cut the nut halfway in two. If you angle the saw about 30 degrees or so to the side, it will cut much like a die but not nearly as fast. For a nut the size of the axle, you could put the blade thru the nut first and make two or more angled cuts imitating a die. Just cut deep enough to make teeth and allow the shavings room to get out, 1/8" or so. this is your chance to experiment and learn.
  24. Rodney, if you gat a write-up of any kind in the papers, please let us know. Thanks.
  25. It's a perfect example of "The more, the merrier". Besides, I can use all the help I can get. I especially like reading posts from "newbies" that have discovered what neat cars these are and opt to keep them mostly original.
