  1. I would say it's about the same. Maybe better. The driveability of the car is much better now, in my opinion. Much more relaxed cruising at speed and less busy getting there. It is nice not having to up-shift twice in about 50 yards.
  2. This brake adjustment procedure worked best for me on my '41 Dodge. It does sound like the rod that activates your master cylinder is adjusted too long though. There should be a little free play at the pedal before the piston in the master cylinder moves. That would explain your hard pedal and brake drag issue. http://www.ply33.com/Repair/brakes
  3. I have done steep hill starts with no problem. I was concerned about that too. Keep in mind I have fluid drive and these motors have a lot of low end torque. The rear is from a '93 Explorer. Without the fluid drive I would probably go at least 3.55 or maybe 3.73 to protect the clutch from slipping on those steep hill starts. I wanted low rpm cruising so I went 3.27 and I got it.

  7. Bob, I had a broken brake drum and needed two new wheel cylinders so the budget sort of dictated my swap. I had wanted different gearing anyway.
  8. Well my saga began about twelve months ago with a leaky rear wheel cylinder and has been one brake issue after another ever since. I have replaced the entire rear brake system by installing an 8.8 Ford rear with drum brakes. Two sleeved (stainless steel) wheel cylinders were installed on the front this week, along with a brake lining adjustment. A sleeved (brass) master cylinder was installed along with one new piece of brake line. Hopefully that is the last of the, limp home with a brake problem, I have been experiencing all too frequently.

  12. Bob, too bad you'll be down another week, but like you said, both will be done now. Temporary inconvenience, Permanent improvement. I got both my sleeved front cylinders from Hagen's Hiway installed the other night along with the sleeved master cylinder I picked up from ebay. Hopefully after bleeding the system and installing the floor it will put these nagging brake problems behind me.
  13. Locking the flywheel has worked for me and is my method of choice. When doing these type of things alone and I couldn't clamp the flywheel I have also used another method. Determine when #1 piston is on the compression stroke and push as much rope as possible into the spark plug hole, leaving it hang out so it can be removed. Then turn the bolt or nut and the rope compresses against the head and holds the crank firm. I always make sure it is the compression stroke because I feared damaging any open valves.
  14. In a pinch a little bit of Vaseline works for a points block lube too.
  15. Greg, The '69 is a go anywhere car even before the spare fuel pump. I have been working on getting the '41 back to that point as well. Dang brakes anyway. Neither one is show quality but both are good drivers. With a kid in college cash flow is more of an issue than reliability. Once she graduates I hope to be able to travel a little more with the old machines.

  17. Glad it worked out for you. That lube is essential, but don't use too much. I put a set of points in my '69 once before going for a long cruise to a show. As we got there it started acting up. Long story, but the short version is I had used too much lube and it had worked its way onto the contact surfaces and was acting like points stuck open or gapped too wide. Lesson learned........Tim P.S. I now have a good spare fuel pump. Why? Because as has been stated here many times "90% of fuel problems are electrical". LOL
  18. Bob, I feel your pain. Been a couple weeks since the brake problems surfaced on the '41. I got the master cylinder installed today but I am waiting on my wheel cylinders to come yet. I have been driving my '69, which is great, but I hate having the '41 out of service..........Tim

  21. I used to do the parades and throw candy. We really enjoyed it. It got pretty expensive. One woman with a beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other stuck her head up to my window and berated me for not throwing "enough" candy to her kid. That was my last time at that parade and I quit the candy all together. I have often said if I had a candy "sponsor" I could put their name on the car and throw their candy............Tim
