  1. Salt rock, yes but used ACE Prep and Prime first. After a safety check on a lift and a few adjustments, my truck passed the pre BBQ road test. The drive is a 35 mile drive from 300' above sea level to 6500' which is a good pull. Temp leveled out at 190 degrees, oil pressure constant at 45 psi. I could have driven the distance in high but shifted down to 2nd at the end for higher rpms which rested the engine. The 2nd and over on an overdrive would have been perfect. I have the OD and will eventually install it.
  2. Conversation # 5: at the grove met two fellow Nebraskans. The commented on the usual but were mostly impressed by my smooth, quiet running engine.
  3. Conversation # 4: had a pizza at Bear Mountain Pizza, enroute to the Giant Sequoias Grove. . A woman came to my table and asked if that was my Dodge out front. She really liked the patina and invited me to their car show May 5. She asked what was under the hood, when I replied the original flathead, she replied, "Just what my husband would do"!
  4. That's why you should never put paint (lipstick) on a truck!
  5. ggdad, question: are cars and trucks sexist? Maybe we should use the term "ms". LOL
  6. Clear coat is PAINT without pigment for color, so it comes in several types. Since clear is paint, a primer is very important yet primers are NOT clear BUT ACE and others have a product called Prep and Prime and is a clear liquid. The prep is phosphoric acid which neutralizes rust and the Prime is PRIMER! That is what I use and have no rust appearing after four years. one does not want to leave the Prep and Prime on very long, read the directions.
  7. Austen, paint the underside a light color, makes for much easier seeing. A good matt clear would make that rusty red a real winner!! Please don't mess with Mother Nature!! Edit, the more I see that dash the more I want to get my hands on it. I would wet sand with 1000 grit, then prep and Prime, then 4/5 layers of matt clear. Then I would find a very good pinstriper and subtly accent the hues. Black. / chrome gauges and that would be a winner.
  8. Ed would a SBC fit? LOL
  9. That should work but might be difficult to drill those holes wth the clutch housing in the frame.
  10. Try Bazzoka bubble gum licorice flavor! Easy to install and "reusable" !
  11. My camper program is being redesigned, will continue this fall. TKS for all the safety comments, they all were taken seriously. Onother value of a forum, good constructive warnings.
  12. Wally, I stand corrected on the Wrangler reference. The two master cylinders have different bolt patterns, thus a common mounting plate is required. I made mine to mount to the housing first, then I tapped the holes for the Cherokee MC. there is not much room in that space. I retained the OEM mechanical in line brake switch. Best to whoever goes this route.
  13. This is the way I added a MC in my truck and my suburban. The mounts are different but the new MC behind the OE is the same. You will need a proportioning valve also. This is my Suburban mount. It retains the pedal mounts. The truck pedal mount is different.
  14. While I favored Michigan, Villanova play a great brand of BB. It is my favorite sports event of the year, I saw a lot of the games including the upset of Virginia. Well, now it's the season st watch the snow melt in many areas. Not out here.
  15. Out for a pre BBQ test drive today. Will put it on a lift on Tuesday for a full safety check, new rear shocks, and oil change then drive it up to the Sequoia Giant Redwood trees, a 6,000 ' climb in 35 miles, a great test. So stopped by this beautiful field of flowers for a picture.
  16. This for your truck? I retired mine twice, in hindsight, I made the task much too complicated. The truck has two simple separate systems, three if you include the turn signals. One is to the engine, the second to the lights, the third the turn signals. There are no fuses. I suggest you study and know each system before you start. Good luck. Oh and release the oil line from the gauge cluster and pull it out to where you can work on it and remove the steering wheel to give yourself some room. These are are my opinions based on my experience, they more like guidelines than hard and fast rules. Some where in the future I may totally rewire my truck. My very best to you.
  17. I'm test driving my truck, all is checking out. I installed a new temp gauge today and took a quick drive. Temp read 175 degrees so good. Tomorrow I have a lift scheduled and new shocks on the back, then a run up the mountain. Spring flowers.
  18. Or do as I did, use a 3/4 " sheet of plywood, bolt ir down with the shovel strips, and stain it black. I haven't regretted it one bit.
  19. Yes, Rusty's kit up front, 98 Cherokee rear axle, 3:73, and '98 Cherokee master cylinder, on my B3B truck. Been six years, very pleased
  20. I've bought two kits from Rusty Hope and used a 98 Cherokee Wrangler dual chamber master cylinder. Very pleased.
  21. Memory conversation #3: prior to the shop fire I drove my truck up the mountain to Grant Grove where the General Sherman and General Grant Giant Sequoia trees are. Shortly after parking, a gentle man and his son walked up to me. They were from Germany, the son said they were surprised to see such an old truck drive into the parking lot. In Gemany old vehicles like mine are only in museums. When I opened the hood and started the engine the fathers face just beamed. I took a picture of the two beside the truck with their camera. On Monday the truck goes on lift for a BBQ safety check,, then a drive up the mountain for the road test. The trees are at 7,000'' about 50 miles from our home so it's a fun test drive.

Fargo , I didn't know of you. I visited with a man whose back yard was the River that can flood. He had two very nice Desotas.
  23. Michigan !! It's difficult to win when the other team brings five three point shooters, fully loaded and capable!!!
  24. I received my packet of decals on Friday. They will be on my truck at the BBQ. TKS
  25. I do not see the drawing as representatve of my flathead engine. Is sludge in part the result of water build up in the engine, no water no sludge?
