First I would write back to the supplier that sold you the bushings to confirm that no one else has had the same issue. Then ask if them if you can drill out the hole. to me there should be some pressure when installing then bushing in the holder to keep them tight and so they do not move but when you have to use a hydraulic press then that makes me wonder if they are even correct. Just my 50cents worth or reply. I am assuming that these are reproductions so that can also be the issue. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I noticed on the brake drum that you are showing that the ends on the brake lines were not chamfered on an angle that is standard to help with the braking and less brake CHATTER. Rich hartung desoto1939@aol.com

For all of the local members within the greater eastern Pa, N.J. Delaware and Maryland. I have been informed that the Annual Macungie Car show that is held in August every year has been cancelled for this year 2020. I have been informed that all events within the main city park have been cancelled because of the Covis 19 virsus go to the Ontelaunee web page and then select the Das Awkscht Fescht. I guess we are going to see that a lot of these local shows will be cancelled this year Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

According to my EIS brake catalog you should have 11 inch brake shoes: The fronts are number 192 bonded and the rears are number 1161 bonded lining. May be someone switch the rear axle assembly. So measure your brake shoes. Rich Hartung desoto1939@apl.com

I was just on the Hershey AACA regions webpage this afternoon to get a status for the Fall October Hershey Event for 2020. As of their current posting and see that attachment, Fall Hershey is still scheduled for October 2020 The Hershey regions webpage is located at Hershey.aaca.com. I suggest that you book mark this webpage so you can stay informed as to the status of the event. We all know that most of the car shows and swap meets have been cancelled because of the C-19 virus. The other day I received a facebook messge from Mike Warsaw Moparpro and he had a question that looked as if it had came from the AACA regarding if the vendors were being asked if they want to have the event or to not have the event. Not sure where mike got this memo. I am going to try to reachout to Mike to get more information I live near Valley forge and according to Gov. Wolfe we are schedule to go to GREEN around June 5,2020, so we are all keeping our fingers crossed. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

46Desoto: Where are you located? Is the car a 4 door or a coupe. Take some pictures. I own a 1939 Desoto with three on the tree is yours a fluid drive car? Ask a lot of questions. You will need to get at least a three arm drum puller to removed the rear drums because this is a tapered axle setup. Also note that on the right side of the car you have right hand nuts or bolts and on the left side you will probably have left handed threaded nut or bolt. The bolts should be marked either R or L. So becaredul to verify which way you try to remove the lug bolts or lug nuts. I you ever take the car to a mechanic remind them at least three or more time of this fact and also that the car is 6 Volt POSITIVE Ground and not Negative Ground like the cars that you are accustom to working on. If you have to replace the battery cable do not go to the napa store and get the regular 12 volt battery cable. You need to get the larger 6volt size 00 or 1 thicker cable because of only using a 6v battery. we all have done the 12 volt and they do not carry enough voltage. You have basically an Autolite electrical system for dizzy, points, rotor, condenser and vacuum Advance. I can give you the appropriate numbers for the replacement parts but need to know the number that is on the dizzy body such IGT4102. Parts are specific to the dizzy. The brakes are Lockheed and are not what you are typical to a more modern car. If you contact me I can explain in more details and you will have two wheel cylinders be wheel. Take you time to get to know the car. Best advise is to get a 19-46-48 Desoto Service Manual and also a Parts book. These are valueable piece of literature to have when workingonthe car and will answer a lot of your questions. There isa water distribution tube in the engine block behind the water pump this distributes the water to the back of the block to keep the valves cool. These get rust and will have to be removed and it can be easy or it can be a real trying experience. We all have done these so ask around on the forum. Again my name is rich Hartung I live near valley Forge pa just outside of Philadelphia you can contact me. I have a lot of cross reference catalogs for looking for replacement parts for these older Desoto and Mopar cars and trucks. Looking forward to seeing pictures and hearing from you There is a National Desoto Club and the 2020 Convention is going to be held in Wisconsin The contact person is Dave Frank 262-745-8161 desoto2020@outlook.com. every year it moves to a different state. The NDC can be found at www.desoto.org you can also contact the 46-48 model year coordinator he is a good friend of mine and he is the president of the club Les Pesavento 586-945-5105 lesterpes@gmail.com You can tellhim that I gave you his name. Both of us have a vendor spot at the fall Hershey swap meet if you ever make it to Hershey, PA in October. Hope this gets you going in the right direction. When I ever have to use a scissor's jack I also when on dirt or a gravel shoulder like to place a flat piece of wood under the base of the jack just to give a solid footing and not on loose soil or gravel that might start to have the jack start to sink because of the loose ground Rich Hartung

Which YEAR Dodge car is that ornament?

Kencombs is so correct about safety while working under a car. My friend was working on his airflow Desoto and had the car up on a BOTTLE Jacket and accidently hit the bottle jack with his foot. He was working on the manifold and then the car came down and did damage to his arms and hands. This is one of the reason why I do not like bottler jackets there is such a small point of contact of the jack for being under the car and the base of these bottle jacks is so small and makes the unit unstable. Need to have a larger point of contact on the ground and alo at the point where it hits the frame or point of where it is supporting the car or truck. I use heavy duty jack stands but also use my large floor jack to support the car jus in case if something shifts. Better to be extra cautious when under or near a car that is off the ground. DJ: As soon as I was able to verify the recall I decided that in the best interest of everyone to post this information to the forum members. This is the kind of information that take a top billing to insure that no one get injuied. I know someone might not get the message but hopefully it will get passed onto your other car buddies and if you are a member of a local car club I hope that you pass this along to your club newsletter editor and if they have an email address for their members that they send out an emergency notification. I contacted my webpage contact for my local club with the info and they replied back and told me that it would be going out tonight. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Plymouth: They did find that because of older machinery that the armto hold the leg upright was not machine close and this is the main reason why the recall. Yes we allshould check our equipment when ever using a jackstand and also have a hydraulic jack supporting the car or truck when working when the car or truck is being supported off the ground. Just informing everyone about the potential hazard. I also like your replies to posts. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I AM GOING TO ASK THE FORUM ADMINISTRATOR TO SEE IF WE CAN KEEP THIS POSTING PINNED TO STAY AT THE TOP OF THE POSTING BECASUE IT SO IMPORTANT FOR THE SAFETY OF ALL MEMBERS. I JUST WANT TO LET EVERYONE KNOW THAT IF THEY HAVE A SET OF HARBOR FREIGHT JACK STANDS 3 TON OR 6 TON MODEL NUMBER 61196, 61197 OR 56371. YOU NEED TO STOP USING THEN RIGHT NOW. THEY HAVE A SERIOUS FLAW AND COULD COLLAPSE WHEN THE CAR HAS WEIGHT ON A UNIT. THERE WAS SOME BAD MACHININY ON THE LEVER THT HOLD UP THE SUPPORT AND THEY COULD COLLAPSE AT ANY MOMENT WHEN THERE IS WEIGHT ON THE CAR.. TO THE BASE OF THE STAND AND LOOK FOR THE PART NUMBER. TAKE THE STANDS BACK TO HF AND THEY WILL GIVE YOU A STORE CREDIT. ATTACHED ARE PICTURES OF THE STANDS AND WHERE TO FIND THE PART NUMBER. PLESE PASS THIS INFO ALONG TO ANY AUTOMITIVE FACEBOOK GROUP THAT YOU ARE A MEMBER. WE DO NOT WANT ANYONE TO GET KILLED OR HURT. THIS IS A SERIOUS ISSUE REFER TO THE PICTURES BELOW OF THE RECALLED ITEMS RICH HARTUNG DESOTO1939@AOL.COM hf JACKSTANDS RECALL.docx

I use and old time mechanic tool called a Snap Gap tool. It was made to be used on several different cars. Basically it has a metal sleeve that goes around the distributor cam. They provide you with a special feeler gage that has a special adapter and then the specific gap feeler bar. The nice thing is that you do not have to have the dizzy positioned exactly on the high sport of the came to have the poits open and to adjust. The special gapping tool permits you to gap no matter where the points are located on the cam. If anyone is interested I can take some pictures of the tool and show how you can set the points when the dizzy is in the car and also when it is out of the engine block. Some of the old time mechanics in the group will know about this tool Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Clay: looking good. I know you have put a lot of work and effort into getting it to this condition. Now after getting it done then off to an AACA sanctioned show to get it judged. But remember the first time out the highest that you can place is a 1st Junior. You have to attain this and then the next AACA event you can then go for the Senior. Rich HArtung

I had similar pbm. I was testing my brakes during the winter months every two to three weeks. One days I had a great pedal with the normal amount of travel. Then then next week the pedal went to the floor. I immediately got out of the car and looked at all four wheel and di dnot see any leaking brake fluid. I came back into the car and pushed the brake pedal again and it had pressure and did not go to the floor. Was able to get a good brake pedal. Then this happened again in another week. Took all drums off the car to verify that there was no leaking wheel cylinders and I had no issues at any wheel. So took the plunge and took the from floor board out of the 39 Desoto because the MC is under the floor boards. Took the MC out of the car. This MC was rebuilt about 25 years ago by me and have used Dot5 brake fluid. Rebuilt the entire unit with a brass piston and all new components. Bench bleed the MC and put the unit back in the car issue solved. About a couple days later went to my work bench and picked up the internal check valve adn the was able to notice a very slight cut of tear inther rubber seal on the check valve. This was my issue that cause the pedal to go to the floor. So this might be your issue and small part that might not be immediately visable and then you find it later on. I use a napa 1010 and it is similar to the Fram. I do not use the washers. You have to make sure that you have the rubber gasket on the lid to seal the upper lip and the lid has to be on very tight so that no oil leaks out when it is being pushed into the metal canister. Do not ask how I know but we all have done this with these type of oil filters. Rich Hartung

Update on round vent screens for the bell housing: My friend ordered a set from the company and he sent me an email today and he stated they were a perfect fit. I have asked for the item number so we can all order some to have in our parts supply. I have attached a copy of the picture tht he sent me with the new round screens and the one sitting on the top of the BH is an original. the ones in the bell housing are the after market replacements. Here is the exact screen that my friend purchased and the part number is RST-100 1 inch 6 pack. He told me they were a perfect fit and could not have been better. They only way it could have been better is if they were free. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

Squirebill: Rich Hartung with the 39 Desoto. Newtown Square PA is veryclose to my home. Ilive over here in Audubon PA near Valley forge off of PA 363. I looked inmy Mopar streamliner parts book but it only goes upto 1947. The Brake pedal pull back spring for Plymouth is the same number from 1942-47 866260 this same brake spring was used across the line for Chrysler, dodge, ply and Desoto. Also there is a small brake clip that the spring connects to at the pivot point where the rod goes thrught he housing I do have pictures of this setup. I also checked my TriState Mopar parts catalog brake spring 1949 is part number 670046 and it states 1937-41 except 1941 Dodge, Desoto and Chrysler and the part number is 670046 1950-52 uses part number 1313309. yes they old honeycomb style radiators are expensive to repair. Like Jerry sugessted that an aluminum radiator might be a replacement unit. Just paint it black or leave it the silver color. I am assuming that this is not going to be a show car but a pleasure and driver car to have fun and not worry about judging and 100% correctness. Most of us have drivers in various stages of restoration. Basically have funwith the car. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

I have used RI wiring and they are a very good company to do business with. They use the modern plastic coated wire and then put the appropriate cloth covering over the plastic wiring. Rich Hartung Desoto1939@aol.com

Even if you gator glued them into position that might work also. Since these small vents are not seen when you are showing the car it would not matter how they are kept in place. The object is to prevent crap from falling into the pressure plate clutch area and to vent the heat from this area. So any method of keeping them in place should work. I am waiting for my friend to get his vents and see if he had any problems and will report back to the group on his findings. Rich Hartung desoto1939@aol.com

I have a friend that just order the 1 inch metal screen. I am waiting to hear back from him as to the fitment. I know these small items are hard to find but if we can get something close then it was a great find. This is why we have the forum and when we find things like this it is in the best interest to let people know about the item, Also known as passing along the information.
