  1. I found the bowl about 200 ft down in the woods. Was sitting up with rainwater in it. Reckon they got tired of coming up to the house to wash their hands. Also found the cat food storage container missing from a year ago.
  2. If you're running gas with ethanol the porcelain won't color. If you found some "real" gas it will.
  3. None of these? https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/desoto,1948,s-11,3.9l+237cid+l6,1486774,cooling+system,thermostat,2200
  4. Bent a 1/2" drive end also. In some cases it's just stubborn.
  5. A large socket attached to a 36" breaker bar with about a 2 ft pipe on the end of that. Would not budge.
  6. Be careful about what oil you put in the engine. If the previous owner was using non-detergent oil and you put normal detergent type oil in it, it could stir old sludge up and start it knocking. That's what did mine in 30-40yrs ago.. flushing it and using regular oil.
  7. If he does something stupid like I did, putting a block of wood in the cylinder with the head tacked back on to keep the engine from turning. That bent a rod. I did that because the motor mount kept flexing and blocking the damper didn't work. Good that some have had a couple of hundred successes. If you have to block the flywheel do it with a piece of wood (something that won't damage the teeth if it slips). I did the 36" bar, the whacking it, heating with a torch, etc. The impact gun got it off with the first try.
  8. If you had to you could use a grinder to cut the top ball looking part off the nut, then clean up the nut for a socket. With that part being wider than the nut, the only other way would be an open end wrench. And I'm here to tell you, I bent a 1/2 drive end on a 36" breaker bar trying to get mine off. Also bent a rod trying to brace the crank to keep it from turning. Finally got mine off with a Dewalt impact wrench with 750 ft/lbs torque. Easily. Yours might come off easier.
  9. Sorry, sometimes I look at a post and forget it's not a car.
  10. Someone might find them useful. Raccoon 2.mp4
  11. The nut on mine was turned so the points interfered with getting a socket on the outer smaller bolts around it. Seems other vehicles have fewer.
  12. Looks like it is for an old type hand crank. The standard one would not hurt.
  13. Just US history. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plymouth_Rock Nice that people are interested. Great looking car.
  14. Namely, also a gram.
  15. Dang, think I'll let the machine shop do that..
  16. There are 2 sizes. Mine is 2 1/2 inches. The outer rim has to fit in the recessed groove. They're not expensive.
  17. Time to break out the glass plate and 400 grit sandpaper. Round and round motion. And watch how you hold the part. Even too much pressure on one side can cause the surface to grind off more there. Depending on the part rotate it in your grip a 1/4 turn for about 5 motions on the sandpaper. Check where the shiny surface is forming.
  18. I'll play with mixing and matching wrist pins and rings with the old ones. Good idea.
  19. How would one weigh a rod end separately? You'd have to find the same mid point but then trying to get a rod end on a scale?
  20. When I get those NOS .030 pistons from VPW I'll compare all of them and match them up. Just wondering if adding rings later would change the weights much. I'll probably compare the rods also. I got a very accurate scale. Watch me shoot for 1/2 a gram. ?
  21. Wasn't paying attention to that but when I noticed the different pad thicknesses I grabbed the 3 unlike ones to see how they compared.
  22. Separating rods from the pistons. I definitely bent the #3 rod when I used a wood block in the engine trying to keep the motor from turning while I took the crank nut off. It also turned the bushing in the top. Replaced it with a #5 from the newer block. Also replaced #2 rod. Looks like a drunk tried to drill the squirt hole out. They finally hit it. Letting 2 rusty rods soak in Evaporust. Looks like light surface rust.
  23. Working on other stuff besides the block. Taking off pistons from the rods. Noticed near the piston pins there were different thicknesses. Pistons came from same engine. Checked 3 different ones out. Weighed them as they were, with rings, carbon, etc. Two were almost the same weight, 3rd was about 3 grams off.
  24. Edited for multiple errors? Your English is better than my German. Could always speak better than I could write it. If you want to get a laugh, wait til you go into a parts store and ask for Verbrecher kontakte instead of Unterbrecher kontakte. Guy told me with a smile "Leider nicht". (Instead of breaker contacts (points) I asked for criminal contacts. Guy told me Unfortunately not.) Anyway, as much trouble as it was, was a lot better than pulling the engine.
  25. Saw that. Amazing how long it floated.
