Mr. Belvedere Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Is there any part of the VIN and engine number that correspond so you can tell if the original engine put in at the factory is still in the car or not? Quote
Young Ed Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 Not sure but requesting your build card from Chrysler will tell you the original engine #. Quote
Mr. Belvedere Posted February 27, 2008 Author Report Posted February 27, 2008 How does one go about that? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 earlier model cars had the engine number along the left rear frame rail just before the tip up..not sure how far forward this trend carried...body number will dictate if 218 or 230 is stock... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 update...I went out to look at my frame as it is up on the lift already...the frame rails on my car are nicley undercoated thus unable to verify one way or the other..sorry... Quote

My '40 Dodge has the car model number (D14) stamped on the frame rail. If I had the original engine then the machined pad on the drivers side front would start with D14. But this would still not verify if this specific engine came with this car or not. Phil Quote

greg g Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 I don't think Detroit car makers started the decodable Vin numbers until the 60's or so. If I look at my car, I have and engine mumber on the engine, a body number on the tag on the fire wall and the serial number, not of which are linked other than the model designation of the leter and first 2 numbers of the engine number. since I did and engine swap they do match anymore. So our early mopars didn't have "matching numbers" even from the factory. Quote
JerseyHarold Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 The starting VIN's varied by series and assembly plant. The first three digits in the body tag were the body style number. So if the car is (for example) a 4-door '52 Cambridge, the VIN should be in the Cambridge sequence, and body number should correlate with what the car actually is. The engine number is supposed to be stamped on the frame near the left wheel. Like many other things Chrysler, nothing is cast in stone and there were inconsistencies. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 27, 2008 Report Posted February 27, 2008 I found the number on the frame rail on left side in front of the rear axle. I think it correlates by falling into the serial number sequences built at a given plant during a particular year......if that makes sense. The book lists serial numbers "beginning with # such and such and ending with a certain number". It seemed to say my car is a 1947 model.....as I do not have an original title. The number on the engine would have started with P15, but I now have a 1957 engine, so that doesn't work anymore. You likely will need to do some wire brushing on that frame to uncover the stamped number.....usually crudded and rusted over. I wrote my number in the front of my repair manual once I found it.
