I saw an overdrive on the bay and had a few questions:

if you put in an OD does the drive shaft have to be shortened?

Is this OD electric? Is that a nightmare to put it in?

Does it help on the freeway? Lower RPMs?

I think he's asking over $800 - is that in the ball park? It would probably cost another $800 to have it shipped.

just curious

Same length as the standard 3spd unless you have a short wheelbase car. Certainly helps on the freeway. 1/3 less RPM on the freeway. If its an R10 its electric and takes maybe 1/2 a day to install and wire depending on your ability.

I have a factory OD in my '52 and yes there is an electric solenoid on it. All I did was run a power wire to it with a toggle switch. But you also need a cable as well to engage it. Mine works good and sails down the highway nicely keeping up with traffic.

OD is a great addition. And shipping shouldn't be more than $125. I had an A833OD 4 speed shipped from upstate NY to OK at that price. And it is heavier than the older ones. UPS or Fedex either handle up to 150 lbs and a lot cheaper than freight.

Ken is right on that. We shipped an old R7 floor shift OD that weighed just under the maximum they would ship. I think it was about 140 for that one. And that tranny was HEAVY.

Don-

As others have already said, the OD is a direct bolt-in swap for your existing three speed, unless you have a short wheelbase car. The tail shaft section on your existing three speed is the same length as the overdrive section of the OD transmission, so the overall length of both transmissions is the same.

The electrics are fairly simple, and are not difficult to install in the car. The lockout cable is used to keep the overdrive from engauging. You can use a hood cable, or any aftermarket cable for that matter.

There is a bunch of info about my '55 Dodge OD transmission and what I did with it for my car on my site, www.50plymouth.com

The OD is a 33% reduction in rpms when engauged, so it makes a big difference in cruising speed. I'm running the stock 3.9:1 rear end in my '50, and the car will easily maintain 70-80 mph, even uphill.

I can't imagine my car without the OD, I would do it again without a doubt.

I checked out the 46-49 Chrysler OD and something doesn't look right. I'm thinking that maybe it is a semi automatic rather than the 3 speed OD. WereChrysler cars equiped with a three speed and OD? Why don't you post the pic of the one you are looking at to get the conventional wisdom of the group as to whether it is in fact is an OD unit. Ask the seller for better pictures of booth sides of the transmission. That linkage doesn't look correct for standard.

there are now 2 overdrives on the bay. one has different #'s not an r-10.

the other red one looks ok...

i would double or triple check for sure...as they were made for different engine adaptations.

The one in Houston Texas is correct for our cars but $850.00 starting price with a chipped tooth sounds way too high for me. Who knows how high it might go. I have heard that George Asche will send you one complete with all the relays, cable and switches required for $1200.00 or so depending on what he has in it. There is a person in Oregon who sell complete shipped to your door for $1600.00. He advertises in Hemmings under MOPAR parts.

The OD pictured by Greg is an R-7 41-2 model.

I was looking at the pictures of the o'drive and noticed that it has a chipped tooth. How would you find a gear like that? I would feel uneasy using that. With my luck the gear would break apart at full speed and destroy all the other gears.

I like the idea of overdrive - $800 is steep considering it would have to be rebuilt.

I think I'll do what I always do and wait until the price goes up before I decide. The trans on my 4 door was completely rebuilt - if it ain't broke -

I guess I could spend my tax refund to help the economy grow.

I would have to asume that if it has chipped teeth, the missing pieces are roaming around inside somewhere, probably in the bearings...

My '55 Dodge OD was in sorry shape when I got it, the reverse and first gears were missing teeth, and the keeper clip that holds the free-wheeling clutch drum in place had come off and was ground up in the case.

I was able to find replacement used parts for the OD stuff, and I robbed the gears out of my perfectly good original three speed to use in the OD transmission.

I paid $300 shipped to my door for the busted OD, but it was sold as "usable". Cost me another $400 or so to rebuild it, along with all new electrics and cable.

I don't think I would pay $800 for a unit that needs to be rebuilt.

Don,

Just for S&G, check with Neil Riddle in Seattle (206) 285-6534. I bought mine from him but it was enough years ago that price comparison wouldn't be a valid measure today ($450 + $100 shipping). I've dealt with Neil on numerous occasions and find him to be an easy-going guy who'll do you right.

Neil is also a good source for the OD cable; I bought one from him several years ago. One unique thing about the correct cable is that it has a twist to lock feature so that you can lock the OD out.
