Any idea what this transmission is?

I thought it was a plymouth 3 speed like the one in my 48' but the speedo input is on the other side.

The speedometer cable switched sides at some point I think in the early 50s. You should still be able to use it if needed and just adjust the cable. In my 48 for the OD I bought a short extension for the cable.

I started this reply as a joke, but after some thought, my post might have some credulity. What if the tranny is for a right hand drive car? and the speedo cable only appears to be on the wrong side. Since I know nothing of how the RHD cars are set up, maybe one of the down under members can set me straight.

hmm, a longer speedometer cable is cheaper than a new tail shaft housing.  One would think, I know, that MoPar wouldn't make a special tail shaft housing for the RHD market.  But what do I know, lol.  At some point they did make a new tail shaft housing so there you go.

Well, I don't know if this helps or adds to the confusion but when I had my 1941 Plymouth Coupe, sold in 2013 I ended up owning a spare mopar gearbox......didn't really look at it at first, but on close inspection  I found that it had the speedo cable fitting on the Oz drivers side or US passenger side BUT even more unusual was that the shifter linkages were also on the OZ Drivers side or US passenger side and it had no mounting for the driveshaft parking brake assembly..........eventually I found that it was from a 1957-1962 Oz only Chrysler Royal which were based on the 1953/54 Plymouth with 55/56 Plymouth fenders(see pic).............another anomaly that I've since discovered was that the Chrysler Royals, at least the 6cylinder standard trans cars had the parking brake on the rear brake drums which tallys with the type of gearbox I had.......I have some pics somewhere If only I could find them.....lol...........andyd

The transmission i just pulled out of my '48 has the speedo on the (US) passenger side as well. Same tailshaft part number too. Transmission is dated January '49.

There should be a hand stamped date on the pad right behind the shifter. You will need to take a wire wheel or some sandpaper to find it.

The cable I have (which may or may not be stock) reaches both locations. The OD I replaced this is a '55 and speedo is on driver side.

One thing to note is that the earlier transmissions had the Speedo gear nut/seal made with the seal vulcanized to the nut, and isnt replacable. The later transmissions had the nut machined with a pocket and a little lipseal installed. I will check my notes for the modern part number. They are interchangeable, so make sure you have a later style one.
