53windsor Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 (edited) Bought an engine from a 48 desoto to swap into my 53 Windsor. Its a 25" block, so should drop right in, but the exhaust is a little weird and I can't seem to find one like it. Truck maybe? Sorry about the upside down photo. Merle Coggins Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 Looks like a fairly common dual exhaust manifold modification. People will cut the outlet flange off another manifold and weld it to the manifold being modified. They’lll then fix the heat riser flap into the vertical position to direct the front cylinder exhaust out the added center port. 1 Quote

Dansk Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 I wonder how much of a difference in power is gained by doing this modification? Quote
andyd Posted January 8, 2023 Report Posted January 8, 2023 Might have gained 5hp.....when I was building a 230 for the 41 Plymouth because it was RHD the Fenton & other US sourced headers wouldn't have fitted due to the steering box living between the oil & fuel pumps but as I had seen 3 different outlet stock exhaust manifolds with outlets at # 3, between # 4 & 5 and another at #7(lol).....so I used the front and rear of a pair of spare manifolds & had the ends welded up by the local blacksmith( yep here in country Oz there was one, lol)......never installed the setup as I sold the car & engine like a dope.....lol.......I was hoping that this mod might have added 5hp.........with the finned head, 1/2 race cam, twin carbys, HEI and properly balanced I was hoping to get 170-180hp but will never know............lol.........andyd Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 3 Report Posted September 3 I am thinking you will need wheelie bars installed with that setup.....😄 Quote
Tom Skinner Posted September 4 Report Posted September 4 I would think with that set up, adjusting Valves in the car would go from not a good day - to - a Bad Day LOL. Quote

A pair of good fitting leather gloves and long tappet wrenches will make short work of it. The added center flange seems like it would make running actual exhaust to it difficult, since it is right over the oil pump. There is a better space just forward of center, so the pipe runs in-between the two pumps, like andyd's would have. Quote
