Doug&Deb Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 The engine I’m rebuilding for my 52 Coronet is a 58 truck engine. I’m researching both the water pump and fuel pump. Both years show the same part number for the water pump but the fuel pump is different between them. I’m guessing I should stick with the pump shown for the 52. Any suggestions? Quote
Sniper Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 Most likely the 52 Fuel pump would work best, but bending up new hardlines isn't an issue and you could incorporate an inline fuel filter if you went that way. Quote
Doug&Deb Posted December 18, 2022 Author Report Posted December 18, 2022 The difference is the fuel bowl and strainer. The 52 pump bowl is on the bottom and the 58 faces up and is off to the side. It’s probably a clearance issue. I have an old pump. When I’m at that point I’ll check fitment before I buy a new one. I just wondered if anyone else has used a newer flathead. I got this engine from a 51 Coronet and I found out the true identity after running the engine number. Quote
Loren Posted December 18, 2022 Report Posted December 18, 2022 The first question I'd ask is, do you have vacuum wipers? If you do you might want to find a dual chamber pump to remove the lag every time you stomp the gas pedal. If you have electric wipers then any pump will work I suppose. No matter what pump you use try and find the heat shield folks threw away with great gusto, actually work to prevent vapor lock. 1 Quote
Marcel Backs Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 I can attest to the lag in the vacuum wipers when they are operating under acceleration. They practically stop! A dual chamber pump is on the list for my 39 Chevvy. My D14 luckily has electric wipers but I do not expect to get caught in the rain too much once it is finally on the road. M Quote
greg g Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 Put a vacuum accumulated in the line from the manifold to the wiper. These can be had from various cars in pick and pulls for pocket change. Or get a new one from rock auto. These will give you a reserve for hills and brisk acceleration. Here is one on Amazon for example. https://www.google.com/aclk?sa=l&ai=DChcSEwij7LDcwov8AhXE4MgKHa8DCOoYABAFGgJxdQ&sig=AOD64_0ftRyuWVWKw07dwWqvosT3mgqaSA&ctype=5&q=&ved=0ahUKEwjI16jcwov8AhXhFlkFHZqLAxcQww8I7A0&adurl= 1 Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted December 21, 2022 Report Posted December 21, 2022 The 52 Dodge has 2 speed electric wipers...no vacuum wipers. I'd stay with the 52 Dodge pump...this pump will also let you use the factory heat shield. Quote
Loren Posted December 22, 2022 Report Posted December 22, 2022 One of the small ( very small ) advantages of vacuum wipers is that they are infinitely adjustable. With electrics you get two speeds, however with a little clever wiring you can make them intermittent. In the 50s all the cars our family had were equipped with dual chamber fuel pumps, so vacuum drops were never an issue. That said I think a vacuum reserve tank is a good idea. Quote
