Head gasket question

I noticed this staining today.

 

With probably less than 20 hours on the engine since rebuild, should I re-tourqe the head studs?

Clay: I would at least check to see if any of them have loosen and if so then retorque them all inthe proper sequence.

Looks like some type of sealer......like Indian Head gasket sealer

I always re-check after a few heat cycles.

It does look like old Indian Head.  I just used the copper spray though.

 

Will re-torque soon as I get the seat etc done.

Working against the weather now. Few warm days remaining.

Ditto re-torquing.  What that gasket shellac looking stuff is, is a smidge of blow-by discoloring the copper spray on its way out.  I learned that re-torquing on older engines should be done after the first heat / cool cycle before driving anywhere, then again after the first road use reaching operating temperature.  Then "it wouldn't hurt" at 100 miles.  The re-torquing at 100 miles never had any results on the engines I've done.  There are probably scads of re-torquing techniques that all work, but it definitely has to be done.

Warmed up the engine today and re-torqued the head studs.

 

It did need the tweaking!

 

Cleaned off the discolored spot.

I'll keep an eye on that area.

I compare the re-torque ....  Like wiping 3 times to find you only needed to wipe twice.

Something that needs to be done til you are confident you're finished.

Clay:  I was talking to one of the members in the MD chapter of the National Desoto Club and he does repairs also on Packards. They had rebuilt and engine and torqued it to specks. Then came back to the engine a couple of days later and found out that the head bolts had to be retorqued.  You might have to do these process a couple to time to get everything tight.
