Are you meaning the tailshaft part of the trans is super long?  You stated "bell housing" which is the part that connects the motor block to the trans.

R-10J-1 is new to me for Mopar, all I have seen are R10G-1.  Later type??

I have posted here and a few other places in the past about the  letter used after the r-10 as I wanted to try to make a list of some kind the various brand use of the "R-10??? . I know that different letters were used so the reason for the question.

Thanks for the response so now I can add one more to a list. Second entry. ? Maybe 3rd. is a R-10 H which was a later heavy duty used Mostly in trucks and some Hi-Po models of Ford I believe it was.

My question would be, Can you transfer the innards to the 53 transmission case?

Or more likely moving the Overdrive to the 53 transmission.

I have a 52 Overdrive transmission I am thinking of replacing the cluster and the 2nd gear from a 1940.

This lowers 2nd gear for a little speedier take off, which I may need as I have a 3.54 rear end gear.

I know a lot folks with 1949-54 Plymouths will pass up 1955 and later Overdrives because the linkage is different or the input shaft is wrong.

If I can put a 1940 2nd gear in a 52 why not mix and match other parts?

I thought it was the 57 and later ones that changed?

Honestly I don't know, that's kind of why I was asking.

I've kept my Plymouth parts hoard to strictly 49-54, so I don't know if stuff fits from later years.

I don't know why it wouldn't.

I recently removed a R10J from a '58 Plymouth 6.   The bell housing will also fit the eights.

Since it was no use to me in the earlier models I resold it.

I can confirm the identity of the one pictured above. as being typical of 57,8. &9.
