Bdblazer1978 Posted May 17, 2020 Author Report Posted May 17, 2020 Reattached both axles and the steering column. Decided to switch to disk brakes on the front and replace all the drum hardware on the back, so we're waiting on parts. Next is the break lines and then the engine. 2 Quote
Bdblazer1978 Posted May 26, 2020 Author Report Posted May 26, 2020 Installed the new rear drums and converted the front to disks. Need to figure out the brake hoses for the new disks, I dont like the way they connect to the frame. Also installed the shocks and the steering. Finally started to disassemble the engine, glad I did, it needs a good cleaning. Quote
Bdblazer1978 Posted June 2, 2020 Author Report Posted June 2, 2020 Finished disassembling the engine except for valves and cam shaft, which I'll leave for the machine shop. Glad I opened the engine. Every piston had a broken ring and the oil pump is cracked enough that I'm pretty sure it would have failed soon. Also after about a week of work and a LOT of PB oil, I was able to pull the water distribution tube in one piece. Now it's time to clean parts and start body work. 1 Quote
Jocko_51_B3B Posted June 2, 2020 Report Posted June 2, 2020 That water distribution tube is a real pain. It took me three days. Had the engine been worked on previously? Were the pistons oversize or original? Was the disc brake conversion difficult? So far I've kept mine stock mostly out of fear of messing something up. Quote

We're planning on keeping it stock except the brakes. Since this is my first restoration and first old truck, I'm with you and it's a lot safer to be able to reference the manual. The disk brakes were relatively easy. Because it's a 3/4 ton I've had to make a couple modifications. I'm having custom brake hoses made and I ordered wheel adaptors so I can run the original wheels. No idea on previous work to the engine. This is my first re-build so I'm reading a lot and asking the machine shop a ton of questions. 1 Quote
tanda62 Posted June 3, 2020 Report Posted June 3, 2020 Where did you get your disc brake kit? Also what master cylinder are you going to use? I could not find a dual master that would fit on my 3/4 ton B4C, all of them are too long and would hit the steering box. Hopefully your box gives you more room. Quote

As of now I'm sticking with the factory master. It's going to be a while till I have the truck back together enough to determine if I'm comfortable with the feel of the factory or want to upgrade. 1 Quote

I installed a Toyota Camry master cylinder on my 3/4 ton (with the Rusty Hope kit), it fit with little modification. I can get you the part number if you want. Others on the forum have used Cherokee masters, with minimal mods. I also added 2 brake light switches (the pressure switches), one for each brake line circuit. -Ro Quote

pflaming Posted June 4, 2020 Report Posted June 4, 2020 My truck looked like yours, under that oxidation I found this! I got a ton of compliments. 2 1 Quote

That's amazing. My wife and I are still debating how we want to finish our truck, she prefers the look of yours. What did you do to go from pic 1 to the finished look? Quote
pflaming Posted June 5, 2020 Report Posted June 5, 2020 An old school used car salesman said: 1) wipe it down with acetone, 2) clean it with a DA sander and 320 grit but do not be aggressive, 3) wet sand down to the original paint starting with 320, the then 400, then maybe 600. I never used 600. Finally I gave it four coats of satin clear coat. All the above and a lot of elbo grease. Then my shop burned to the ground, early one Sunday morning with the truck inside. Then it looked like this! So back to work now it looks like below photos. Quote

pflaming Posted June 6, 2020 Report Posted June 6, 2020 It’s a fun truck to drive. I have a 230 cu in engine, and a T5 overdrive transmission to put in. Then will put in a VW air conditioner, resand and put a fresh coat of matt clear on it. Then it will change from a good truck to a great truck. 1 Quote
minicooper Posted June 7, 2020 Report Posted June 7, 2020 On the dual master cylinder. I looked mine up, couldn’t remember the part number. It bolted up to my B3C with no clearance issue (1 inch from the steering column). If you're interested, it’s a Toyota MC, part number NM55022 https://www.autozone.com/brakes-and-traction-control/master-cylinder-brake-system/duralast-new-master-cylinder-brake-system-nm55022/486326_0_0. I told my wife, once the engine and transmission are in I'm driving it around the block. Even if I have to sit on an orange bucket to do it. 1 Quote

When I first got my Flathead, I drove it up and down the dirt roads out here, with bad brakes, bald tires and an engine that poured oil out of the tail pipe, smoked and sounded like a runaway washing machine! It’s an awesome thing! Quote
