DonaldSmith Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 47 DeSoto, out for Spring to-do items, discovered coolant in plug wells 1 (some) 2, 3 and 4. Heater tube adjacent, but no noticeable leaks in tubing or hoses. Will observe. Alligator hood, besides, it doesn'r rain coolant. Mystery - anybody see anything something like this before? Quote
casper50 Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 I've got some in #1. I believe the thermostat housing has a small leak and is running into #1. Quote
captden29 Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 probably gasket at thermostat housing. capt den Quote
busycoupe Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 Just a thought, how is your radiator? If you have a smallleak in the radiator the airflow from the fan could blow coolant across the top of the engine.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 Head bolts in that area enter the coolant jacket of the engine. Do the head bolts have any pipe dope on them? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted May 6, 2018 Author Report Posted May 6, 2018 Good probable suspects. Thanks. Head bolts are tight, and no sign of leakage under the heads. Mostly, I suspect the thermostat housing, since the bolt nearest the housing is rusted. Maybe something to do with a coolant shower from the thermostat housing. I've never had the problem before, but I have been idling the engine this Spring, for maybe 15 minutes or so at a time. I'll keep the eagle eye on the situation, and issue a full report, or at least and executive summary. Quote
Rosco Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 I had the same problem a couple of years ago - the car was overheating and the thermostat was stuck closed. Some of the coolant was leaking out and found it’s way to the plug wells. Changed the thermostat and the housing gasket, tightened everything up, problem solved. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 Thermostat gasket or hose to housing leak... common issue. Quote
Worden18 Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 My 51 is doing that very thing...into #1. Its the thermostat housing/gasket. Will fix it after my brakes are completed. ? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 6, 2018 Report Posted May 6, 2018 temp changes while in storage and especially if the hose clamp/gasket was just snug and not tightened ted to do this...it is always a good idea to come back later and sung up a hose a tad after an reasonable amount of operating time...
