48Windsor Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 Success! Have been troubleshooting the Fluid Drive on the old girl. Spent the last week resolving wiring issues. Amazing how brittle the old wiring is! I think most of the problem was just insulation being worn off wiring in the engine compartment. I also found one of the choke rods resting on the screw of kickdown switch???(not sure what its called as I get all the components mixed up). That couldn't have been good. The info on the Imperial site was very helpful. Anyway, had to take it into town, around 10mi. roundtrip to get it inspected. Tranny performed flawlessly! Chicks were waving and old guy like me stopped me at at the gas station. Now, on to carb rebuild, exhaust leak, etc. etc. etc. Thanks to all for the assistance thus far. Tom B Quote
DonaldSmith Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 Congrats on a wiring triumph! Yes, ground the wire to the kickdown switch and the car won't upshift. I found with my car that if I misconnected the two wires to the carburetor, things wouldn't work right. Lots of fun. Quote

knuckleharley Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 " Now, on to carb rebuild, exhaust leak, etc. etc. etc. " You mean you haven't finished it yet? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 It's those etc's that'll get you. Quote
White Spyder Posted February 10, 2017 Report Posted February 10, 2017 Good news on your successful repair of the Fluid Drive. Quote
dpollo Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 Congratulations but just to set the record straight, it was not the Fluid Drive you made right. Fluid Drive is the coupling between the engine and whichever transmission the car has. In your case it is the Semi automatic ( M 6 ). Other cars might have a standard three speed but still have a Fluid Drive. Quote
Dodgeb4ya Posted February 11, 2017 Report Posted February 11, 2017 Glad you got your M-5 Transmission working right! There is a choke rod deflector to prevent the choke rod from grounding out the KD switch preventing up-shifts or unwanted downshifts. 1 Quote
48Windsor Posted February 12, 2017 Author Report Posted February 12, 2017 Thanks all for the comments. Dpollo, not up on all the semantics and terminology. It says FLUID DRIVE on the trunk so thats what I'm going with, meaning all that drivel line stuff. Hows that for being exact! Dodgeb4ya, thanks for the great pic! I thouht there had to be a way to keep it from shorting out. Right now I put some wiring shrink wrap around the choke rod to keep it from grounding out. Rube Goldberg I know but it works as a temp fix. Wonder if I could make something similar to what's in the pic. Is it aluminum? Or, are they available somewhere?? Thanks again all. Tom B Quote
greg g Posted February 12, 2017 Report Posted February 12, 2017 Congrats on your persistence in chasing your problem. Through this forum you can see that 90 percent of the problems with the semi autos are exterior stuff. Quite a testament to MoPaR engineering over the course of 70 years. Quote
