Hi.  First time poster here, hope you guys can help me.  i have an auto parts store in Canada and a customer needs a new crown and pinion for his 47 half ton. Unfortunately he has re assembled it so all I know is it is 41 and 10 (4.1 to 1). There is a number cast on the outside of 1115941 with an A in a circle.  The inner seal is 1126007 which crosses to a CR 14423.  A company called classicnosparts on the interweb has one with a part number 1567835 which their listing says will work.  I have to be careful with shipping to Canada because of freight and customs charges.  Does anyone have a parts book for this old girl to make sure I'm on the right track? It's a model FL1-16, serial number 90042087.  Probably Canadian production so these numbers may not make sense.  Thank you very much.  Tim

We're looking for a crown gear and pinion gear.  I should be able to get the seals and bearings locally.  I'd just like to see if the 1567835 is the right set for the truck.  Thanks,  Tim

If I am reading this book right its 664392 for the set. I do not see that # in my 40-47 dodge fargo parts book.

Hey thanks Ed.  classicnosparts.com shows  4 part numbers on the listing  1567835, 6673661, 664392, and 1192394.  I presume they are supersessions.  The 664692 jives so it looks like i'm on the right track with this one.  I really appreciate your help!  If anyone has a supersession list we could make sure.  Thanks very much.  Tim

Now another suggestion. Rather than spending all the coin on a NOS gear setup I'd be looking for a good used 3.73 out of a car.

Does Canada have different classification and duties for imports?

I know when in  Australia my employer imported some needed parts- found that the parts we imported from the US to there were very cheap duty fees - if they were classified as use/rebuilt for construction equipment as compared to almost anything else. Which they actually  were in this case. Spare parts new and used/mechanical/paint /tools etc. shipped with used equipment in 40 ft. containers were also listed as replacement parts on the shipping lists which did not add much to the import duties.

Have the seller label the parts as replacement /rebuilt and or for agriculture use?- Farm truck if you follow my line on thinking?

Just a thought, maybe list the end user as the buyer??

Hope it's what he needs! Good luck.

Passenger car crown and pinions will interchange as will the whole assembly 37  up to 52

There would be no issues sending these parts cross border.

I have had stuff shipped up marked as antique farm tractor parts and kept my company name out of it.  It has worked out.  I don't have a problem paying as long as I'm 99% sure I'm getting the right product.  Seems to be very limited info on these rear diffs.

Young Ed:  I could probably convince him on the 373s but there is hardly anything from the forties left around here.  Thanks for the suggestions guys, and keep them coming.

I have been told that ....   HS code 9966.00.00   .......parts for vehicle greater than 25 years old should greatly reduce/eliminate import/duty charges

What duty, NAFTA, no duty on goods made in Canada/USA/Mexico?

You don't need a 3rd member carrier from the 40s specifically, the 10 spline side gears and axles were used int the 50s, then the 16 spline began, those could be used too, with some changes.

You can get the carrier from a car or truck, look at the cars, and even the bigger Chrysler too.....good luck they are out there in western Canada

Thanks so much for your help on this guys.  We may have a new plan.  I've located a 47 Dodge special deluxe nearby.  Rockwood - You're saying we can install this third member into the truck housing? With no spline count difficulties?  What axle ratio is the car likely to have?  Thanks again, there 's a wealth of knowledge here!

The 46 to 48 Desoto often used a 3.73 ratio as did the Chrysler with M6 semiautomatic and the short wheelbase Plymouth and Dodge.

All will interchange until 53 when the axle spline changed.   Most common ratio to find in a Plymouth with 15 inch wheels was 3.9 to 1.

The 47 Dodge you mention started life with 16 inch wheels would likely have a 4.1 to 1 ratio  a direct bolt in for the half ton truck.  These diffs caused very little trouble so are not as notorious as some from that era.  The input shaft flanges are easily changed.

Hi Tim, you do not mention if the truck, has an original type 218 CI 98 HP engine, or a later 228/236/250 or even a 265.

Going back to a 4.10 gear ratio is not the best choice, unless this is a restoration truck, for parades or just putting around town on Sundays for ice creams.

Now there will be some who are okay with this gear choice with very tall 16 inch tires in the 31 inch range, and the truck will cruise at 55 mph, but be screamin @60-65 mph.

Look for an older late 40s Chrysler car, they had 3.54, 3.73, and 3.9, a 3.73 with a 218 engine will make a nice cruiser, nice around town and 60-65 on the highway.

Hi Rockford.  The truck is a 2nd owner survivor.  He's had it for 25 years and I don't think it's done more than a 20 mile round trip in all that time.  He's well aware of its limitations and quite content with them.  I understand what you're saying but in this case I think the 410 will be fine.  Hopefully the car one is good when we get it out.  You should see this truck.  Original right down to the paint and hubcaps.  I've driven it and it feels like its 2 years old instead of 70. Thanks a lot.  Tim

Couple of teeth broken off the pinion gear.  I suspect that after 70 years the gear oil was mostly gone.  I wan't in charge of maintenance.

That's Rockwood, lot of the cars had 3.90s too, so that would be fine, its his truck his choice...

Hi guys. Thanks for all your help so far.  And sorry to Rockwood for getting your name wrong.  We got the rear end out of the car and the tooth count is 39 and 10.  We're gonna run with it because it looks good inside. Does anyone think there will be an issue with spline counts or carrier bearing size?  I've read about the A and B carriers and the non interchangeable crown and pinions but the plan is to put the entire third member into the truck housing.  Just looking for reassurance.  Thanks. Tim
