Bingster Posted April 5, 2016 Report Posted April 5, 2016 I asked this some time ago but could not find the thread. Now that I have to move it to make room for a new garage, I'll ask it again. The '47 Desoto is on a dirt floor with the wheels somewhat depressed. I get depressed too, just looking at them! I want to just attach a rope or chain to the front end and pull it out with my pick-up, but am afraid I'll bend something, aside from my back. Any ideas? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 (edited) I use a heavy nylon strap around the huge front cross member...refrains from attaching to the lower A arms, the sway bar mounts and for the most part the bumper brackets themselves..spring them you going to wish you had not.... And don't try to yank it out. Take up the slack very slowly. If you have an old fashioned truck with a "granny gear", just let it idle as you pull. Quote
suntennis Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 If by depressed you mean low air, get the tires aired up even if it requires one at a time to the air station. Quote

desoto1939 Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 Bingster: JAckup the car at each wheel. put some wood under each wheel so now you have a hard surface for the wheel to roll on. then put some more wood so the car a roll forward. . It is easier to pull on a wooden surface. Just some thoughts, Rich Hartung Quote
Bingster Posted April 6, 2016 Author Report Posted April 6, 2016 I was thinking of that and even pulled the jack under the rear bumper, but I wasn't sure where to jack it up. Differential? I guess if you say "each wheel" then there must be someplace on each side of the car. I'm trying very hard not to destroy something! Quote
Don Coatney Posted April 6, 2016 Report Posted April 6, 2016 If you had a flat tire what would you do? Quote
Bingster Posted April 6, 2016 Author Report Posted April 6, 2016 I did have a flat tire and filled it. It's held air. Quote

If jacking up from the side of the car use the frame near the rear wheel. Fron tire can be don ethe sameway of on the fron under the lower control arm when you can make good contact with the floor jack. The problem with the diff is that the car is raise in the middle and now you have a balance issue unless you put jack stands under the alxe at the end to get a point where the car will be firm and steady. Bingster Posted April 7, 2016 Author Report Posted April 7, 2016 The other question is: I've read that it doesn't make any difference what gear shift position the car is in because of the fluid drive coupling, the car will freely move wherever. Right? The clutch pedal has been removed. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 It will roll easier if in Neutral. If the trans is in gear there will be some resistance caused by rotating the turbine within the FD coupler. Quote
Bingster Posted April 7, 2016 Author Report Posted April 7, 2016 Thanks. Will the column shift respond without the clutch pedal? Quote
Merle Coggins Posted April 7, 2016 Report Posted April 7, 2016 As long as the engine isn't running you can shift all you want without using the clutch. Nothing is spinning. Quote
Bingster Posted April 7, 2016 Author Report Posted April 7, 2016 Great, thanks. I'll give it a try and let you know. Quote
Bingster Posted April 8, 2016 Author Report Posted April 8, 2016 Okay, I got the car up on four 8' 2X8's. But it doesn't seem like it wants to budge, at least with manpower. I don' think that the hand brake is on. It seems to be in neutral. Guess I'll have to gently pull it out with my little Ranger. Quote
