minicooper Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 The last owner of my truck put an 8 volt battery in it. After I finish updating the wiring, I want to replace it with a 6 volt like it had originally. I've read a few things on this site about this topic, but couldn't find anything about going back to a 6 volt from an 8. Would the last owner have adjusted the voltage regulator to compensate for the 8v and if so, what's the procedure for adjusting it back for a 6v battery? Plymouthy Adams Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 that should be an affirmative but as you all know...PO's care capable of many tricks and short cuts.....the standard 6 volt regulator is very capable to be tweaked to the rate to charge the 8 volt battery..that would be my first move, install the 6 and adjust the regulator for the correct outputs. Bobacuda Posted January 22, 2016 Report Posted January 22, 2016 I had changed my truck to 8 volt and ran it that way for about 12 yrs. The lights were bright and the wipers really moved . Since I am rebuilding the truck, I have changed back to 6 volt and simply included a new voltage regulator as part of the rebuild. It's already set up and I don't have the concern that it is going to malfunction anytime soon. And if I ever want to go back to 8 volts, I already have the regulator. 1 Quote

My regulator looks to be the original as it's been painted over more than once and had a dirt dauber nest in it when I got the truck. I installed one of those on my '33 Plymouth 15 or 16 years ago and it hasn't had a problem at all, it has worked exactly as advertised. If you are running a early 30s or earlier car with internal 3rd brush regulation I highly recommend it. Sure seems like there ought to be someone making a decent electronic regulator for the later two brush 6v generators but I haven't noticed one. On the other hand, I haven't really looked either.
