JPP Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 I was pulling my engine and noticed that there is no connection to the frame from the motor mounts all the way back to the rear. So the transmission relies on engine and drive shaft relies on transmission and rear, is this correct or I am missing a part. I understand the well base is short, but I am used to 1929 fords where everything is bolted to the frame. Thanks Quote
Jeff Balazs Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 You should have a front engine mount and a pair of mounts at the bell housing just ahead of the transmission. Jeff Quote

Jeff And I think they had to have been there or the engine would have been sitting back against the firewall or laying down on the frame. Quote
JPP Posted January 18, 2016 Author Report Posted January 18, 2016 I have the front engine mount and the bell housing mount, thought that the transmission or drive shaft would have had some kind of support. Quote
Don Coatney Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 If you have not yet acquired a service manual I suggest you get one. They are available from several sources in both disc and hard copy. I personally like the hard copy as it is easier to have the open book on the workbench for quick reference. 1 Quote

It is not needed. You will find it works fine as long as those mounts are in good shape. Jeff Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 the set up is just reverse of what later became standard across the industry...two up front and one in the rear, more people identify with this set up over that of the opposite Quote
JBNeal Posted January 18, 2016 Report Posted January 18, 2016 (edited) My 2¢: the front engine + bell housing mount setup was done so that the flatheads could be mounted in multiple applications: trucks, forklifts, welders, generators, airport tugs, tractors, combines...they all had different transmissions, and all were archaic gearboxes by today's standards. Larger engine + transmission setups required support geometry to change to accommodate the greater mass generating power. As for the trucks, the gearbox cantilever load on the bellhousing was small enough that a trans.support was not required. Edited January 18, 2016 by JBNeal 2 Quote
JPP Posted January 19, 2016 Author Report Posted January 19, 2016 Thank for all the input. Make sense to me. So outing it back in, do I bolt up the Tranny to the engine before it goes in? Clutch pedal a pain to get out of the war on removal, any insights? Quote
JBNeal Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 The shop manual mentions the engine + transmission can be removed & installed as a unit, but I believe the transmission can be removed and installed separate of the engine + bell housing. Quote
Desotodav Posted January 19, 2016 Report Posted January 19, 2016 I have removed quite a few engines from trucks and have always found it easier to do it with the transmission detached. You will need to attach the bell housing to the engine as it houses the rear engine mounts, and then the transmission can be easily pushed in from the rear. Quote
