BigDaddyO Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 Stopped by to see these beauties and watch and listen to them start up and fly. For $2,200.00 you can fly the P-51 for a half hour. I think it would be worth every penny but I left my logbook home... 1 Quote

RobertKB Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 (edited) Very nice!. It is good to see these WWII aircraft in the air. Recently, Canada's only flying Lancaster bomber crossed the Atlantic to England and spent the better part of two months touring with the only other flying Lancaster in the world. The plane is now safely back at its home base in Canada, arriving last Sunday. http://www.torontosun.com/2014/09/28/canadian-lancaster-bomber-leaves-impression-on-britain In flight http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-lincolnshire-28756779 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_jzxarAAKk Edited October 2, 2014 by RobertKB 1 Quote
Niel Hoback Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 Thanks for posting that! The only thing better than hearing a four engine bomber going over is hearing TWO four engine bombers going over! That was really stirring. Quote
Merle Coggins Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 Just adding a little humor to this thread about awesome WWII planes. This just came to me this morning in an email. An old Marine Pilot sat down at the Starbucks, still wearing his old USMC flight jacket and ordered a cup of coffee. As he sat sipping his coffee, a young woman sat down next to him. She turned to the pilot and asked, Are you a real pilot? He replied, "Well, I've spent my whole life flying planes, first Stearmans, then the early Grummans. I flew a Wildcat and Corsair in WWII, and later in the Korean conflict, Banshees and Cougars. I've taught more than 260 people to fly and given rides to hundreds, so I guess I am a pilot, and you, what are you?" She said, "I'm a lesbian. I spend my whole day thinking about naked women. As soon as I get up in the morning, I think about naked women. When I shower, I think about naked women. When I watch TV, I think about naked women. It seems everything makes me think of naked women." The two sat sipping in silence. A little while later, a young man sat down on the other side of the old pilot and asked: "Are you a real pilot?" The older man replied... "I always thought I was, but I just found out I'm a lesbian." 4 Quote
RobertKB Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 There is a Lancaster bomber about 90 miles from where I live at the Bomber Command Museum of Canada. It is not airworthy but they do have all four engines running. Several times a year they pull it out of the museum building and fire the engines up. It certainly makes your willie tingle to hear four Merlin engines running. http://www.bombercommandmuseum.ca/ Below is a picture of my '38 Chrylser in front of the bomber. That was several years ago and they only had the starboard outer engine running then. 1 Quote
Mark D Posted October 1, 2014 Report Posted October 1, 2014 If you've never been to the collings foundation, put it on your list of things to do. They open four times a year I think, and at least two of those dates are to host ww2 battle re-enactments. They drag out all of their equipment, (which increased in size substantially this year), invite reenactors and their equipment and the battle is fought two times a day. Check it out: http://www.collingsfoundation.org/cf_battle2014.htm 1 Quote
busycoupe Posted October 2, 2014 Report Posted October 2, 2014 I've been there several times. The car collection is pretty amazing also. Dave 1 Quote
busycoupe Posted October 3, 2014 Report Posted October 3, 2014 (edited) I found a few pics I took at Collings house in Stow, Ma at their Father's Day open house in 2007. He has a 3 story garage for the bulk of his car collection and an airplane hangar large enough for a B-24 and several floors of more cars. Outdoors they do an air show. Quite amazing!
