busycoupe Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 Does anyone have a spotlight mounted on the drivers side windshield post? Last week at an antique shop I picked up a Unity 6" spotlight. When I looked it up on their website I found that it was actually the correct one for my 48 Dodge. It would need a new bulb, plastic grip, and mounting bracket. ..About $80 in parts. Their site says that it mounts on the windshield post. It looks cool, and I think that it would be fun to have on the car. My concern is that it may interfere with my field of vision while driving. Does anyone have any experience with these? Thanks, Dave Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) I installed a spotlight which I understand was from a 50 Ford. The base wasn't quite right, but I installed it anyway. Installed. Interior: If it weren't for the swan neck mirror, I would have mounted the spotlight lower, but the antenna may have also been in the way Edited September 18, 2014 by DonaldSmith Quote
martybose Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 My Plymouth has a set, and I would have to be able to see through the hood and fender for them to be in the way, as I leave them facing downward normally. Go for it! Marty Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 I believe my car had one at some point in time. Hole is on the inside but not on the outside. Quote
pflaming Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 (edited) Are spot lights still legal? Seems I heard they had to be wired so they would not turn on if the head lights were on or the engine is running or . . .they have to be covered with a 'sock' . . . busycoupe Posted September 18, 2014 Author Report Posted September 18, 2014 Don C. My car has a hole through the corner of the dash in the same spot as yours. It also has the hole on the outside, through the cowl. That is why I bought the spotlight in the first place. However, when I fit the spotlight shaft through the hole, it was immediately apparent that it would not work in that spot. The butterfly hood on my car hit the light about an inch into the shaft. Now I am wondering if it is worth it to get the parts and drill a hole in the dash post. Don S, does your spotlight intrude in your field of view? Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 18, 2014 Report Posted September 18, 2014 busycoupe: Nope. Fresh photos, outside and inside: The spotlight is pretty well hidden behind the windshield and door pillars. If it weren't for the classic mirror, I would have installed the spotlight in the typical position as shown on Don C's car. The antenna would be better on the other side of the car Quote
DJ194950 Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 I did see the interior shot of the spotlight, but could not stop looking at the beautiful woodgraining in that picture! Two tonesof wood appearance, type, outstanding! DJ Quote
busycoupe Posted September 19, 2014 Author Report Posted September 19, 2014 Thanks for your help. Don Smith's car with the spotlight looks good. Perhaps I should rehab my old spotlight and install it. Quote
Bingster Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 Hey Don, Nice Looking Car! How'd you do the dash and interior metal trim? Very nice job, and I love the color and grain. I was thinking of doing similar. Quote
DonaldSmith Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 When I bought the car, it came with a loose set of restored woodgrain moldings. All I had to do was to install them. The PO had told me that the man who did the woodgraining had since passed on. You should see the Bakelite paneling. You will see the Bakelite paneling: An amateur photographer took a shot of the dash: 1 Quote
pflaming Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 I note a heater by the driver's feet. Is there one on the other side also? The car. Now that is luxury. WOW! Must be fun to drive. Quote

BobT-47P15 Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 My P15 ragtop had two heaters.......mis matched.........when I got it. Only replaced the one on the passenger side with a genuine MoPar item. Didn't think I needed two since I don't drive it much in real cold weather. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) I think the Unity company has all the various items for those lights including the correct mounting brackets. This link goes to their web site...................http://www.unityusa.com/Parts_ep_49.html They used to make a 6" and a 4 or 5 inch diameter light......don't know if they have both now or not. pflaming Posted September 19, 2014 Report Posted September 19, 2014 (edited) I'm sitting here with a four day head cold and deep cough. Dr said it would work its way out in 10 -12 days. Heater: Is one used as a heater and one as a defroster? Our 46 Chevrolet had the heater under the seat. In Nebraska winters we sure liked that for those of us in the back seat. Was that a GM feature? No they are either both heat or one heat one defrost. Plymouth also had an underseat heater. Quote
