P15 - propshaft front coupling rubber cover

I need to replace the rubber cover on the propshaft front coupling but I can't find the part listed anywhere.

Does anyone have details of a suitable replacement that may be available off the shelf?

I also need to source rubber covers for tie rod ends.

Any help would be appreciated.

I haven't found a modern CV joint boot that has the correct dimensions. I think Roberts (and maybe others) carry rubber boots but my experience is that it is old rubber and if it does not fail and tear during assemble it will fail shortly thereafter. I am using leather boots on my driveshaft because of that.

Bernbaum has them listed in their catalog. The kit may have leather boots (as Tod mentioned) instead of rubber. It has been my experience you must remove the pin to get the rubber boots installed. Trying to force them over the pin will tear them. The leather boot are split and install easily. I have used the leather ones for years and never had any issues with leakage or dirt incursion.

I called around for the leather covers about a year ago and was told they're not available anymore. I forget which vendor told me that. From what I've heard, it's very difficult to get the rubber cover over the assembly without tearing it. I believe Roberts sells the rubber ones but like Tod said, their rubber products are not so good. Check Steele Rubber. They may have them.

Hint Look on ebay under u joints and you will find the leather covers. As stated above the NOS rubber covers are 50+ years old and they fall apart when they get put on the cars no and when the oil and grease hit them they do not stand up to the oil.

Wouldn't one of those Speedy CV Joint repairs work?  You wrap them around and glue them together.  I would think they would have to work as well as the leather one's you stitch together with a piece of wire.

If you do a complete rebuild of the pin and trunion u joint then yes get a new neoprean CV joint cover . you will have to do some research to get the correct size opening at both ends and then use the modern  screw type hoe clamp. I would suggest that you use a stainless steel clamp so the  unit does not get rust from any water and grime from being under the car.

 

Then you can  un loosen and check for grease in the body.  ALso tape the body for a grease fitting so you can grease the inside every year.

 

The new neoprean CV boots can withstand the newer grease as compared to the old rubber boots.

I bought mine for a 1958 Dodge Coronet from Berbaum's. It appeared to be current stock not Nos. You can replace it without pulling the cross shaft. The FSM says to grease both the inside and the outside of the rubber boot, this is a must. Had a little trouble at first pushing it through the steel housing but then I grabbed  a square-ish  carpenter's pencil, unsharpened of course, and used it to push it through without any problems. It's really not that hard.
