Greg F Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 I have installed a runtz voltage reducer, and getting no reading on my guage. The minute I take it off and replace the wiring, it works fine on 12 volts. I have been trying to find out how to test my reducer. Is it bad? Tried to ground it many different places, with no luck. Some say they have been running their guage on 12 volt for years with no problems. Errrr! Greg Quote
greg g Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 The fuel gauge runs on resistance through a winding. I have heard they are voltage blind, but others have gone through a reducer. If ti works without it then I would say it works. Quote
YukonJack Posted September 28, 2013 Report Posted September 28, 2013 When I went 12 volts on my 47 Plymouth I used the Runtz voltage reducer on my fuel gauge. It worked fine for 3 days then the gauge quit working. Pulled the Runtz out and it looked like it shorted out. Ran straight 12 volts to the gauge and its been fine for about 8 years now. I would never buy another of those Runtz. 1 Quote
DCurrent Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 I didn't know the fuel gauge would work with straight 12v. this is good to know. Now all I have to switch over is the heat and amp gauge. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 Your amp gauge will work fine on 12 volt . You have an old car too , doesn't it have a mechanical temperature gauge ? Plymouthy Adams Posted September 29, 2013 Report Posted September 29, 2013 the early two wire unit has a built in voltage regulator..with 12 volt is cycles quickly and you may see needle flicker at times... Quote
DCurrent Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 Your amp gauge will work fine on 12 volt . You have an old car too , doesn't it have a mechanical temperature gauge ? It had a mechanical temperature gauge, but the wire either broke or someone cut it years ago. I'm going to Hershey next week. I'll keep an eye open for someone that has the knowledge to convert the temp gauge to and electrical reading gauge. I'm tired of looking below the key ignition to read my gas, temp and volts. Quote
Don Coatney Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 If your original temperature gauge is not working it is repairable. Quote
Young Ed Posted October 1, 2013 Report Posted October 1, 2013 If your original temperature gauge is not working it is repairable. Yup Keven on here does them. Quote
