OT/ Chrysler Crossfire

My wife has found an '05 Chrysler Crossfire for sale and is somewhat interested. I've always liked the looks of these cars but don't know much about them other than what I've read this evening in the reviews online. I do know a lady that owns one but haven't had a chance to talk with her much about hers. I was wondering if anyone on the forum does or has owned one and what they think of them. The one we're looking at is an 05 convertable manual trans with 114,000 miles. It doesn't appear to have been wrecked. Just gave it a quick glance today, I got away before the salesman latched on to me. Anyway if you have any pros or cons I should know about, lets hear 'em. Thanks guys.

I'd be concerned about the lack of any replacement parts that are specific to that model. Recall that it shares much with a Benz of the same time frame

but that model is also long gone.

Hello,

I am somewhat familiar with the cars. They are basically a Mercedes Benz. Very quick, sporty, and well engineered. Fairly easy to work on as far as the body goes. I haven't performed any mechanical work on one, although I haven't heard of any problems with them.

That is quite a few miles for one. Usually they have low miles due to only driven on special occasions. I just painted a rear bumper on one that was an 07 with only 30,000 miles. One thing to be aware of is that only certain dealers are licensed to work on them, and labor is quite expensive.

They aren't a good winter car. Useless in the snow and ice. I would personally have one if I were single again, and i didn't have to haul kids around. I always liked them except for the painted silver windshield surround. Some of them are painted the same color as the body, but few it seems were painted that way.

That's about all I know of them.

I looked at one when new at the dealer ship..opened the door on the lot to get in..the way forward stepdown feature of the door opening when you are not able to swing it wide open made getting in and out of the car very unconfortable..did not even drive the car after that experience..

A buddy of mine has an 04, he loves it but here are a few cons that he found out after the purchase. Oil changes are over $100 a pop, takes 0w40 Mobil 1 at 8 qts, tires are directional with 18" on front and 19" on rear and average between $300 to $500 each. According to the Chrysler dealership, exhaust system is prone to cracking, and any maintenance is very expensive, very few shops will touch, but he has had it for 5 years and drives it to death. So it must be worth it to him.

I would pass on it. They are known for engine issues.

Thanks guys for the input. We were both too busy to make it by the dealership to kick the tires today, maybe tomorrow. I admit, I like the looks of the car. Black on black with extra black helps too. I'm a big guy, I'm sure getting in and out of it will be a chore but it'll pretty much be her toy. She has a friend that has a nissan roadster convertable and has enjoyed riding in it with the top down. I'm not a nissan man, had a pathfinder years ago. The only "Path" it knew was to the repair shop. When she spotted the crossfire, I thought well maybe this will be a neat little ride. I have to give my wife credit. I have drug home many cars and motorcycles over the years. If I wanted it, I bought it. She's never said much other than pokin a bit of fun at me. If the crossfire is at least reliable and not a money pit I don't care if she buys 2 of them. Thanks for the help guys.

One more thing, if not a crossfire what would you suggest? It's gotta be a fun drop top car.

My wife has had her MR2 Spyder since new and loves it. Fun to drive, drop top, and gets great MPG's. Nice thing about the top is that it is manual so no electric systems to fail. There is a good owners forum out there as well.

We've had a close friend pass away so we haven't been back to the lot. Had alot going on. I did notice it was still there this morning as I passed by.

The older I get the more appealing the warranty sounds. I like to work on vintage autos, the newer stuff will go to someone who doesn't cuss as soon as the hood is raised seeing that the axel shaft has to be pulled to remove the alternator.

... One more thing, if not a crossfire what would you suggest? It's gotta be a fun drop top car.

I keep checking this guy's 05 magnum wagon with a hemi....just can't get past the overall tunnel effect rear viewing of those to get one....yet....otherwise I like them.

Wait for a drop top challenger...it'll happen!

What about a Chrysler Sebring convertible. I believe they come in both

hard top convertible and soft top. Probably not as expensive to work

on.

We bought the Mrs an 06 Infiniti G35 fourdoor sedan after the tornado

damaged her PT Cruiser. She liked it because it was "cute". But we've

discovered they are rather a money pit. Just cost us almost $1900 to

fix the driver's seat that quit moving. New complete frame and motors

plus a new switch that operates the seat. The repair shop said it was

more expensive to fix than a Mercedes. Ah well........

Don't have any experience with a Crossfire, but some of the remarks

above don't sound so good.
