Don Boger Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Working the night shift has its benefits for me, I had nothing to do the other night during a cure so I went back to my roots as a composite lay up tech and made a center windshield post for the 50 out of Carbon graphite. On the left is my original that I used for the mold, on the right is the prototype graphite part. To secure it to the inner post I used some thick gauge aluminum plate bent just like the original part. The benefit of this is the part is lighter and just as strong (if not stronger than the original) I am currently pulling molds off of other little parts I have laying around as I sand blast them in prep for paint. Don Boger Posted June 29, 2012 Author Report Posted June 29, 2012 the lower bed parts, the access doors on the doors themselves. Just little things, the good thing is I can paint all the stuff body color and nobody would be none the wiser. I even thought about pulling a mold of my review mirror just for fun since the mirror surface fell out. Quote
Don Coatney Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Its not what you buy but what you build. I read that somewhere. Great job! Quote

TheMoose Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Looks really nice! Question, how hard would it be to make one for the interior with a mounting boss for a rear view mirror? Quote
John-T-53 Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 That carbon fiber piece is really cool! Great idea! I know a guy who's addicted to brake fluid. He says he can stop any time. Any update on that one yet? haha.. Quote

Don Coatney Posted June 29, 2012 Report Posted June 29, 2012 Good quote Don.....makes me feel better about all the less than sucessful stuff I've made...lol48D Quote came from the original poster. Important thing is you have learned from all the less than sucessful stuff. I know I have learned from all the less than successful stuff you have built and I hope you have learned from the less than successful stuff I have built! Beauty of life is you can learn something new every day.... Quote
Young Ed Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 the hero: the carbon rod!name it! Don't they call it an inanimate carbon rod? Quote
ggdad1951 Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Don't they call it an inanimate carbon rod? yes they did...knew you'd get it. Quote
Don Boger Posted June 30, 2012 Author Report Posted June 30, 2012 well, the inner piece is proving to be a challenge to me. Might work if I pull a mold off of the front and they do the lay up into the back of it. Quote
48Dodger Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 Just saw that sucker in person...suuuper light. Love it. lol Don is great too.....had a blast showin him around the place. I have a ton of pilothouse stuff here, so its always fun hanging out with someone who "gets it" lol. 48D Quote
Don Boger Posted June 30, 2012 Author Report Posted June 30, 2012 thanks for showing me around and getting me on track with my truck! Quote
John Mathias Posted June 30, 2012 Report Posted June 30, 2012 grill bars! oooowww! that would look awsome! Quote
Don Boger Posted June 30, 2012 Author Report Posted June 30, 2012 grill bars! I guess I can try, doing the bars would be the easy part, its making the mounts that might give me trouble. I should have brought one with me to work today..... Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 1, 2012 Report Posted July 1, 2012 I think the grill bars would be a huge contribution to the site....they are so hard and expensive to find and damaged if they are there. They are what make these trucks IMO. Can you lay in some steel mount straps w/ nuts on them? I got faith in you to figure it out! Quote

I got faith in you to figure it out! what I would have to do is like what I did with the windshield post, make the mounting brackets and bond them to the inside of the bars. but here is a question, does anybody know how the Stainless will hold up to 350 degrees for 6 hours? The Stainless headers on my Raptor take a lot more than 350 degrees & all they did is turn a brownish color. Quote
Don Boger Posted July 1, 2012 Author Report Posted July 1, 2012 I know most guys restore their trucks, so the next question would be, would I need to make them where they are glossy graphite, or ready for paint/vacuum plating? Quote
B1B Keven Posted July 1, 2012 Report Posted July 1, 2012 I have 3 extra stainless bars for the '48-'50 trucks. Pretty beat up, but maybe you could use them? Quote
Don Boger Posted July 1, 2012 Author Report Posted July 1, 2012 I have 3 extra stainless bars for the '48-'50 trucks.Pretty beat up, but maybe you could use them? I could, that way I can get the mounting brackets out. that would be the easy way to do it. The good thing about the graphite I use is the resin will fill any voids, plus I can do some basic body work to get them straight if need be. Quote
