I am having trouble with the Ma registry of motor vehicles about registering my car. The problem is the vin number on my mn title. They made one up by using the serial number from my door post and P15482090. Does anyone know what this number is and where it appears on my car?

The P15 number is typical of an engine number it should be stamped into the engine block just above the gennerator. If however you car has endured an engine swap over its lifetime (not unusual) than the engine number might not agree with documents.

Thank you Greg. Your answer was right on. My engine had been painted so it was tough to see that there was anything at all there but I got some steel wool to it and there it was. Now when I have the officer come over to verify the numbers I can show them to him.

Thanks again!

Odd - Mass RMV registered mine with the tag # located on the inner door jamb. Not even a second guess...

I'm going through the same thing. I bought a car from Oregon and they in those years used the engine number for a Vin number, rather than the body number thats on the driver's door post. Many states did that back then. Fortunately I have the original engine and now I have to have both the vehicle and the motor inspected by the state police and verified. Then I go back to the DMV with the inspection papers from the state police and the DMV requests a new title for me with the new Vin number off the driver's door post. A lot of hassle, but not uncommon if you build say a hot rod from scratch you still need to have it inspected and a Vin given to it. You may have to go through several people at your DMV office before you can find someone willing to help you. I ask the lady behind the counter if she was good at dealing with old car titles and she said yes and was willing to help me. A younger less experienced person might not have wanted to take the time. Of course I did slip her a $20,( just kidding).

nj and ga both use engine number as do most states, its on engine block by generator as stated, but its also stamped on the rectangle plate with the rounded edges on the firewall for those who don't have original motor, sometimes you have to clean it off with some steelwool or neverdull to read it

Does anyone know what Nebraska did in that era? I have a 49 first series that I bought there years ago (1981 or so), and several years ago I sent in for a title search through the state vehicle bureau. Oklahoma (where I'm really from) always used the serial number, so it never ocurred to me at that time than they might have used the engine number in Nebraska.

The only thing is, I don't have the engine anymore - it had thrown a connecting rod out the side of the block, and I scrapped it soon after I bought the car. But I could get the frame number, of course, and try that. (I bought it for a parts car, but now it's too good for that, as it has very little rust, and is a 2 door as well.)

Well, I bought my 41 in PA. When I brought it to the court house for title/registration, the inspector (deputy sheriff) looked at the PA title, and went straight to the engine for the S/N.
