1941Rick Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 For you members who have split exhaust or headers, what do you use for mufflers and how loud are they? I have headers and Thrush Glass Packs and they do bark when you punch it. Just curious if there are mufflers that don't have so much bark to them. Quote
hillbilly4008 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Isn't that the point of having duals?? I've got a '53 Desoto with the 251 running a split stock manifold, 2" dual pipes running through Porter steel pack mufflers. Yes they are quite loud compared to the stock muffler which was almost 3 feet long. If your looking for a quiet muffler don't go with anything that has a straight flow through design. Get something chambered, where the intake and exhaust are across from eachother. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Some guys are using Smithy's (or Smittys)....I think they come in 3 different lengths, with the longest being the most quiet and the shortest the loudest. Quote
hkestes41 Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I have the cast iron headers with 2 1/4 inch pipes with a cross over before the mufflers. Mufflers are just short 14 inch no name turbo style mufflers. Here is a video of mine running Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I am with you on the tome and overall volume and quality of sound..should be mellow with no brapping...egad this is not a rice burner that is propelled by bees in a bucket..I admit I do not have a flattie with splits but on all my duals I run turbo pancake mufflers Quote
plyroadking Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 I original had 16 inch glass packs installed backwards, my exhaust guy poured gas in them and lite them on fire before installing. sounded great but would drone "really bad" but didn't cackle. My father said either park a mile away from home and walk in or don't stay out cruising all night. My exhaust guy installed a 14 inch glass pack in front of a 22 inch glass pack. Still sounds good, doesn't drone, and I was able idle in at night without waking anybody. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 the ole trick with glass packs back in the day was fill them with water all the time and do a quick rust out.. Quote
Frank Elder Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 That stuff aint fer me........All my cars have super duper whisper quiet mufflers...I like my cars to glide and slide thru the streets not announce that I am coming from blocks away. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 yeah...that's the Harley mentality..I have seen them fly around older folks traveling in front of me and when they buzz by at the speed they do from the rear..the driver does not hear them till they right at the drivers door..lucky is the fact that when the river of the car does not steer into them..I hae seen a few startled folks cross the yellow due to the sudden blast of noise..this places all drivers in risk of an accident..safety my butt..loud and obnoxious be it car or bike.. Quote
plyroadking Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Guess I should have clarified, I was thinking about pedestrian safety, a couple years ago I stepped out in front of a prius running on electric mode. I walked away from it and all they needed was a new hood and a pair of fresh pants. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 ah..that explains a lot..black mark in two locations eh? Yes I agree a very guiet car is also a bit of a threat to a preoccupied pedestrain..I have come close to similar myself..but I find that parking lot speed was the bigger contributor..we have a person with a electric handicap chair, mind you I am not picking on the person but, I am very much amazed she has not injured anyone at work the way she flies down the hall with speed cranked wide open..them things very guiet..and if you working around ATE and cooling carts etc..you would never know what hit you.. martybose Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 Getting back to the original question, my duals were originally built with a pair of 30 inch glasspacks. Over the years they had blown out, and were getting very loud. Recently i had them replaced with a pair of "turbo" conventional mufflers, which still sound nice but allow me to actually hear the radio at highway speeds ...... YMMV. Marty Quote
1941Rick Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 My problem was putting 2 conventional mufflers on the same side. I could not run a tail pipe out the back on the drivers side. The fuel tank is offset to the left and a pipe could not be put along it.... As a result I have 2 Thrush mufflers side by side and twin pipes out the back on the same side....41...P12 Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 4, 2012 Report Posted March 4, 2012 sad but that is often the restriction on a flathead..side by side pipes..there are a few makers out there that make a dual inlet dual outlet muffler, separate chambers also in stainless one...time good deal in dealing with two of my cars, I moved the gas tank to centerline of the car..one I removed the spare tire well and relocated the spare..other was a bz cp and did not require spare tire attention and easier to relocate the tank to center..plenty of room for true duals them.. Quote
1941Rick Posted March 4, 2012 Author Report Posted March 4, 2012 I looked at doing that....will put it on the to do list.. Quote
1941Rick Posted March 5, 2012 Author Report Posted March 5, 2012 I have found a Thrush muffler with 2 innies and 2 outies.....part number 17637.. Anyone have an experience with these? Quote
claybill Posted March 5, 2012 Report Posted March 5, 2012 smaller diameter ex pipes...louder brap.! larger diameter ex pipes more mellow. higher compression heads crisper brap. low compression, mellow. straight thru muffler , louder. chambered muffler always more quiet. b Quote
Young Ed Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 My truck that I plan to put duals on isn't anywhere near that far but my thoughts are anyone can make noise. Its harder to be quiet. I've gotten a lot of compliments on how quiet my flathead powered vehicles are. And the one guy who was amazed the most was my neigher (RIP Jim) who had 2 60s mopars that were so loud I could hear them 3 doors down and knew when it was time to leave for the car shows. Quote
1941Rick Posted March 6, 2012 Author Report Posted March 6, 2012 I like the quiet as well, but there is just a bit of rebel in me that wants just a touch more rumble....don't want to be confused for a Harley... Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted March 6, 2012 Report Posted March 6, 2012 a Harley is designed as such that a single rope can be attached for use as a boat anchor.. Quote
Don Coatney Posted March 8, 2012 Report Posted March 8, 2012 I was once told that all new harleys come with a putty knife as standard equipment with each bike sold. Quote
