  1. I did the cherokee swap today. So that U-joint dilemma is out of the way. Now I have a driveshaft problem. FYI, a GM powerglide setup is about a foot shorter than the M6 setup.
  2. Don, My '53 desoto wiring is nothing like that. The heater fan and the radio are both powered off of the fuel gauge. The wiper has its own hot wire. And the ammeter has a hot going in and two wires coming out, not sure what that third wire is...
  3. Im doing this conversion now. I did a motor swap and now need to run an electric fuel pump, So I'll be wanting fuse block (radio will be coming shortly) My question is, since i want the fuse block only to have power when key in on, can I get away with running a 10ga. wire from the + side of my fuel gauge to the + post on the fuse block? On my '53 Desoto the radio and heater fan both are powered through the + post on the fuel gauge. (I will be disconnecting both the radio and blower fan) Edit: I am installing a "runtz" on my fuel gauge, so technically I would be installing the 10ga. wire on the 12v side of the "runtz"
  4. Here ya go Greg. This is the only one I could find http://i.oodleimg.com/item/3130761286t_1m?1344455978
  5. I did a drivetrain swap in my '53 Desoto S18. I am contemplating the idea of keeping the stock rear axle, but I just can not justify spending $95 + shipping for a new u-joint through Kanter. Does anyone know of a modern replacement universal joint that I could install using straps or u-bolts? FYI, my desoto has the funky caps on the universal joints. The type where the cap itself bolts to the pinion yolk. I'm in a pretty big rush to get this car back together for the weekend. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Also, I do intend to do a cherokee axle swap in the future. At this point I am limited in time and would just like to get my car back on the road. Thanks
  6. I got in my '53 Desoto today, and for some reason I can not get it to go into forward gear. Goes into reverse just fine. When I got under the car I noticed that the linkage at the trans for the 2nd-3rd gears has a spring on it that came off. When I put the spring back in place it shifted once, then the spring popped off again. There is also a tensioning bolt there, I tightened it up a little and put more pressure on the spring, but it continued to pop off. I repeated this a few times, then ran out of time to work on it. Any suggestions? I drove the car all last summer with no major shifting issues. It sat all winter, now that its time to drive it again I can't get it in gear. I am thinking about drilling the linkage next to where the spring sits in the grove, then installing some sort of clip there so it can't pop off...
  7. Good news! I posted a wanted ad here in the classifieds, and I got a deal in the works as we speak.
  8. What am I looking at here Greg? Looks like mostly late '50s 2bbl carbs?
  9. Hi all, I have a '53 Desoto powermaster. 251 six with the gyro-matic. I really need a new carburetor. Does anyone know where I can find a replacement Carter B&B with the electric leads? Also, I read a thread on here about swapping out the carter for a stromburg. Will that work with my M6?
  10. The steering wheel bolted right up. I didn't take into account the depth of the wheel. I'm not sure how this will feel while driving. As you can see It is crying for a paint job.
  11. I made it into the private yard today. The owner stood me up, but luckily his son was there to take me in. He didn't know exactly where the Desotos were so we just walked the yard looking for suitable steering wheels. We did find 5 out of 7 '53-'54 Desotos, every one had a steering wheel that made mine look good. (Mackster, they made you original one look like GOLD) There was a '54 Firedome convertible in there, that must've been a beautiful car in its day. Shame. Eventually I found a steering wheel from a '57 Plymouth Savoy with the "square" horn ring. I haven't tried putting it on the '53 yet, but I hope to god it fits for the time and money I have spent getting it out of the car. The outer wheel is totally black and all the paint is gone. It leaves a nasty black film on your hands, what the best trick to prepping this for paint?
  12. It looks like that Dodge wheel will bolt up fine, but the wheel itself is different. Doesn't look like my horn ring will work with that wheel. It doesn't look like i'll be able to get in the yard today as I hoped. Our schedules don't mesh. I really was hoping to get in there this weekend as I have my car on my lift with no steering wheel on it, and no way to move it. I really don't want to put the original back on if I dont have to
  13. Isn't that the point of having duals?? I've got a '53 Desoto with the 251 running a split stock manifold, 2" dual pipes running through Porter steel pack mufflers. Yes they are quite loud compared to the stock muffler which was almost 3 feet long. If your looking for a quiet muffler don't go with anything that has a straight flow through design. Get something chambered, where the intake and exhaust are across from eachother.
  14. Hi all, I've got a '53 DeS with the nice ivory steering wheel. Problem is, mines not so nice. I'm looking for a replacement wheel that I can still use my DeS horn ring on. I really love the looks of that Ivory wheel. While Googling various mopar steering wheels I noticed that the '53 Desoto and the '53 Plymouth have a similar outer wheel. Does anyone know if this is really the case? I hope to go to a local private yard tomorrow, the owner says he has 4 '53 Desotos, and 3 '54s. You would think that with 7 total cars with the same steering wheel I would have good odds of finding a decent one, but honestly I've never seen a stock '53 Desoto wheel thats not cracked or disintegrated down to the steel. Any tips would be great.
  15. I cured this problem. I was running my car with no air cleaner. I installed my oil bath cleaner that came on the car, and the problem magically went away.
