41/53dodges Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 hi yall, its time for another wierd engineering opinion type thing! We are looking into building some aftermarket tranny kits, how many of you would want a newer transmission with a column shifter? Quote
pflaming Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Be more specific: 3 speed and OD, or . . . Quote
41/53dodges Posted February 24, 2012 Author Report Posted February 24, 2012 alright, five speed T5 OD Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 alright, five speed T5 OD not so sure of the truck aspect and all but for the car, the T5 already has a following and a kit already available to the masses.. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 Yup the truck to T5 already has a kit too. From langdon. I've got one installed and hanging off a flathead for my next pickup. Quote
HanksB3B Posted February 24, 2012 Report Posted February 24, 2012 I'd sure like to do this along with Rusty Hopes disc brake conversion. I think I hyperlinked a few T5 conversions in my "P15 D24 threads.docx" but would appreciate any links to vendors that supply kits for T5 conversions, what vehicles T5's come out of and what I can expect to have to outlay $ to accomplish this. Would I maintain my stock 4.10 differential were I to go this route? Thanks in Advance, Hank Quote

That, I'd like to see... The t5 works with the stock bell and the Ford Ranger 5 speed is even easier (search for: 'Ranger', you'll find Robert Horne's project). If you are making big changes then the Dakota AX15 is a good unit to look at. Quote
Robert Horne Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 I started a thread some time ago of my project, "5 speed not T5". I am using a 83 to 87 Ranger trans 5 speed in my 38 Coupe. I have the 5 speed bolted to a 56 engine, and will put one on my 36 engine also. Small mods of trans cover, drill a couple of bolt holes, etc. Have to have a pilot bearing made. Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) maybe not..hard to say without a tape there for reference...on the NV3500 install the shifter lever center is 19 3/4 inces from the belhousing and this has the shifter lever straight under the edge of the dash..but with the special bends that angle it back and up another 4 inches thus it is positioned just right for shifting..so in reality he could be close to the seat and still be able to mount a shifter..but I do believe it is going to be very close. For those saying, yeah but this is a Dakota clip..well the 3.7 V6 engine I moved rearward on the Dakota frame 7 inches..lot of fun making new mounts might I add.. ADDED NOTE..........per Don's picture in the following thread, I need to clarify..the 19 3/4 inches is from the leading edge of the bellhousing/engine the NV3500 is two parts and splits about middle I would say..the forward section that includes the bell is 14 inches..this is not a tranny for flathead use..but rather for Mopar V6/V8 upgrades who still like a manual transmission.. Don Coatney Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Tale of the tape on my P-15. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 (edited) Don, hate to bring this up..but..someone has lifted your transmission..what point along those 15 inches is the shifter..very end? Edited February 25, 2012 by Tim Adams Quote

Plymouthy Adams Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 good thing..I bet it was hard for them to run and later defend themselves while holding that puppy..12 inches plus the depth of the bell..I was asking this as comparison to the NV3500 and its location..for a guestimation, how far rearward of a iminagary vertical ine from the edge os the dash do you think your shifter sits? or how far in front of the seat and you bing long legged, can your seat be positioned to furthest forward setting? I still have a P15 4 door sedan to upgrade..inquiring minds wish not to rule anything out.. Quote

The below measurements are all from the ignition key. 1st 2nd 3rd 4th OD R Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Thanks for the pics Don..tells the whole story Quote
HanksB3B Posted February 25, 2012 Report Posted February 25, 2012 Don, My old girlfriend would've had no problem with your install, however I would. Hank Quote
Robert Horne Posted February 26, 2012 Report Posted February 26, 2012 Isn't the shifter too far to the rear? The Ranger trans shifter comes back about 11 or 12 inchs farther to the rear than the stock Plymouth trans. It should be ok, even with the bench seat... Quote
41/53dodges Posted March 30, 2012 Author Report Posted March 30, 2012 ok, the design process is well underway, but would somebody please take a few measurements for us? I would do it myself, but the truck is scattered all over the garage. First off, what is the distance from the top of the flat area on the bellhousing, right above the trans, to the bottom of the floor pan. then, a measurement from the back of said bellhousing to the back of the opening in the floor. Thanks! Josh Quote
