Just down the road from my inlaws, back when I was a bit younger, there was a fellow with a very beat up Willys like that. My father in law called him the Mad Russian. Not actually because he knew his nationality but because of the look he affected. He was a big burley fellow with a longish beard, unkempt long hair, a fur hat with ear flaps, and a coat with a big fur collar, and a wild eyed persona.

My father in law surmised he had an afinity for fresh air like on the steppes of mother Russia, as he would drive the jeep, year round with the windows down even through the bitter witner months.

My guess was that the heater probably was on the fritz. Be that as it may, everytime my wife see a battered old Willys wagon on the road, she says "Here comes (or there goes) the mad Russian.

Yesterday after work I pulled the front fenders and grill. This one has been modified with a sbc. I would work with this frame, but it's 2wd. I really need a beater 4x4 for winter and camping. Will need to be able to pull a trailer of dirtbikes.

Thanks for the info on the year, I wasn't really sure. I have not gotten the title yet.

End goal would be something like this without the chrome strip and slightly smaller tires.

It's amazing how easily some of these old beasts come apart( being 60+ years old and sitting for over a decade).

I have my eye on the same type of rig and I can get it for around probably 800 dollars. I have thought about it as it already has a Buick engine in it and I think would make a neat little project. Jon

The old buick v-6 worked well in most Jeeps. It was an odd fire engine and in my opinion sounds really good through headers and cherry bombs. I think it had as much HP as the later 304 V8's had and plenty of torque, plus it was much lighter.

I was given a 40's Willys wagon a couple weeks ago. Here is a couple pics. What do you think? I think Frankenjeep.

Cool... and the price was right.

If you haven't already, check out http://www.oldwillysforum.com

I started this forum a couple of years ago because there wasn't a good place on the net for Willys wagons and trucks. The site has quickly become the go-to place for these rigs, we are nearing 1300 members already. Have a look when you get a chance, and post your photos there.

At first, when I read the title, I thought this thread was about a whale.:D

However, I see now that the poster has a pretty nifty ol Jeep.

I remember seeing a couple of these wagons in town when I was

growing up in the 50s....always thought they were cool. Especially the

woody looking one.

Here's a link to a page that might help with using the VIN number to

identify year made. http://wx4.org/to/wagons/usefulstuff/vin/vin.html

And, apparently there were some 3 and 4 door Jeep wagons back when.
