ggdad1951
so I figured I could share this project with you all. I'm tearing a VR down to parts so it can get replated, basically reassembled and then I'm going to send it out for the solid state conversion. My only questionis this: the middle relay's rivets that go through the base weren't insulated from the base with the little washers, should they be? I can fab up some if I need to. Otherwise I think with the metal part that bridges to the other relay mount would keep them centered, but if I'm in there, I'd like to make it as good as possible. I've added notes to each picture for clarity. http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x365/ggdad1951/Voltage%20regulator/ Edited October 21, 2011 by ggdad1951
Jerry Roberts
I don't know , but if it is to be converted to solid state , wouldn't they gut all of that stuff anyway ?
ggdad1951
they'd just paint what I sent them, I want it restored, so I'm doing the plating on the base and parts. Those parts wouldn't be taken off they'd just pop off the relays and go to town, not take it down to component levels.
Desotodav
Very thorough job Mark. I just cleaned mine up and had the cover powder-coated black. I can't really offer you any constructive advice on yours though. Desotodav

Desotodav
Great job Mark. You'd never even know it has changed from the original looking at the outside case. The wonders of modern day technology hey! Desotodav
Merle Coggins
Mark, What was the cost of the conversion? I just replaced my regulator this past summer because it was acting up. I might be interested in sending in my old one for a conversion. Merle

HanksB3B
Wow! Please post the company's contact info. Clearly in light of our Voltage Regulators being akin to hens teeth, this offers a great solution. Hank P.S. Does you engine run with it installed? Dodgeb4ya
Do you think it will last as long as an original MoPar? Time will only tell.

Time will only tell. no idea, but one thing for sure, I won't have any issues with the points carboning up! Considering the amount I'll drive my truck, it should last it's life I'd guess. Clearly in light of our Voltage Regulators being akin to hens teeth, this offers a great solution. Hank What makes you believe regulators are hard to find? I had an issue with the charging system on my truck this summer, so I took my generator and regulator into my local starter/alternator shop. He checked it out and said that the gen is fine (I hoped so, since he rebuilt it a few years ago) so it must be the regulator acting up. He wasn't able to test it, but he had a replacement on the shelf. It wasn't the exact same one but was a direct replaement. I believe it cost me $35.
