John,

I am glad to hear that you and your family are alright. This has been a horrible year for tornadoes hasn't it.

John,

I am glad everyone is safe. I just noticed your location.

Battle Creek, Michigan

The place where all the neat stuff in cereal boxes comes from. When I was a little kid living in New York City I didn’t know many other places but I new Battle Creek, Michigan. The Mecca for great stuff !!! Do you have any idea why they needed all those box tops back ?

Be safe, Chet…

all them box tops got you the pretty neat stuff...I still have all the characters in minature from Huckleberry Hound, Top Cat and a few others...remember Mallo-cup points and getting a new box of candy with 500 points? Or getting a gigantic Black Cow by returning your name and address with 25 original Black Cow labels..I have no clue the fun in looking up a code on the internet now found under pop bottle caps..want to make me a winner..just print it there..instant gratification...for those who do not know what a Black Cow was...I can only say you missed one heck of a treat..have not seen one of these in about 10 years now..still around I think only no longer on a stick (similar to Sugar Daddy only chocolate coated)

Tim when I was a little kid our next door neighbor Pete would hunt far and wide to find Black Cows to hand out at Halloween. I do remember he eventually was unable to find them.

I remember Battle Creek for the same reason. There was nothing more exciting than finding a prize inside a cereal box. I remember collecting all the figures from Robin Hood. They were manufactured by Marx in a light green plastic. I also recall collecting plastic dinosaurs and sea creatures. Matchbox cars was another big deal.

Haven't even THOUGHT about a Black Cow for, oh, thirty years. Good memories.

Where I grew up a big treat for us flatlanders was an A&W Root Beer float AKA black cow.

Actually Don, a Black Cow is a Root Beer float that's been blended so that it's more like a runny shake. Mmm mmm good. A true Root Beer float is what you have pictured. Also good.

I worked at the Post cereal plant for 32 years doing instrument repair before retiring in 2007. The Post plant is across the street from Kelloggs and the Ralston cereal plant is across town. Then I first started working in 1974 the prizes were dropped by hand in the boxes as they went by on a conveyor belt. When I retired they were dropped by machines. JohnS
