bamfordsgarage Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 'Cause next Tuesday we expect to be tooling along the Gulf Coast between Mobile and New Orleans doing 50 mph in the D25 — not doing barely 10 mph just 10 minutes from home. Fortunately we were able to jack up the back corner, shove the stub back in the hole, and winch it up the deck truck just as slick as snot. What looks like a weird weld bead around the shaft is just axle grease oozing over the edge. Quote
dezeldoc Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Good time to take the torch to her, hack out that wimpy drive train, loose the front and rear suspension. Drop in a nice 350/700R4 combo, 4 link and a 9" 3:73 rear and a mustang II front end.A nice set of 22" billet wheels wrapped in some nice rubber. Yep that will wake up the beast in the ol' girl!!;) Quote

1940plymouth Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Chris, Too bad that had to happen, sure is an awesome looking car. Good luck next week, looking forward to seeing photos and reading about your next "Excellant Adventure" Bob Quote
greg g Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Lukily it seems you did not do any damage to the rear fender. Wouldn't have thought that that thing had enough power to twist an axle like that. Guess you shouldn't be popping the clutch at stop signs.................. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 (edited) Oh yeah, Greg, that thing will light up the tires every time I goose it going uphill on ice from a standstill. Model T axles are somewhat prone to breakage not so much from big torque as from metal fatigue, small diameter, and old original leather-and-wire oil seals that can wear a groove in the shaft. I suspect all three on this car. Edited April 6, 2011 by bamfordsgarage Quote
LAKOTA169 Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 It was the red axles that did it. That color is just to fast for that old of a car. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 6, 2011 Author Report Posted April 6, 2011 Finally, a technically sensible explanation. Quote
Captain Neon Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 I know the feeling. I had a fuel pump fail the weekend before I was going on a big trip north. It would not have been good to break-down in the middle of Iowa over 100 miles from home or my destination. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Do you have automobile repair insurance? Seems like it would fit the bill! Oh well thats what you get when you buy used. Quote
JAYNE COBB Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Looks like it was broken about in half for a while and it finally gave way. The darker portion vs. the "new" metal look. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 I hate to see a day go by without me driving an old car, so with the '26 T 3-wheeler down for repairs I dug his older brother out for the first time this year — 28 miles worth! This one is a '12 Ford Roadster, pretty much a classic jalopy with a '17 engine and assorted patch-ups and a brush paint job. Great old car this, only a couple spins on the crank and it fired right up after 6 months hibernation. Flathead four, two-speed planetary transmission, 30" tires on 23" rims, 177 in3 and 20+ HP. Cruises at 30-35 mph. No water, fuel or oil pumps. The car has been in our family for 30+ years... I courted my wife in this car and when Dad passed in 1999 he gave it to my son Morgan. He's a great kid but doesn't have much gasoline in his veins, so I'm the custodian and usual driver. Quote
Jim Yergin Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Chris, Aren't you planning on driving your T on a tour through the Rockies later this year? Jim Yergin Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 Hi Jim — yes, on the Cowboys & Coal Mines Tour out of Pincher Creek, Alberta (eastern Rockies). It's a 300 mile drive each way to and from the tour, and about the same distance during tour week. There will be 50 Model Ts there, as this as a National Tour of the Model T Ford CLub of America. My friend Steve and his bride will be driving my '26 Touring, Jerry and I are taking my '24 T Speedster. Steve's wife has little patience for wheels falling off old cars, so its good we got this problem over with long before the tour starts. Quote
RobertKB Posted April 7, 2011 Report Posted April 7, 2011 Chris, looks like you will be going to Heritage Acres in Pincher Creek as part of your stay there with the Model T meet (June 26). Probably going to see you there as I will likely drive out to see all the T's. PC is about 60 miles from Lethbridge. Should also see you in Lethbridge on your way back to Edmonton with the D25 and probably see you at the Red Deer Swapmeet as well. All should be fun. I will keep track of your progress heading north and hopefully you can stop at my place on the way. I am near all the main arteries in the city. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 7, 2011 Author Report Posted April 7, 2011 Sounds good Robert, see you in Lethbridge, etc. If you like, I'm sure we can find a ride in a Model T for you and anyone with on June 26. There are usually more seats than passengers in the Tourings, and sometimes a guy is flying solo in a Speedster or Roadster and welcomes the company. Quote
White Spyder Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 'Cause next Tuesday we expect to be tooling along the Gulf Coast between Mobile and New Orleans doing 50 mph in the D25 — Is there a show going in that area? I don't live too far away. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 8, 2011 Author Report Posted April 8, 2011 Good morning WS — sorry, no area shows that I know of, this is just our route as we drift east from Tallahasse to Dallas. We'll pretty much hug the Gulf until we leave New Orleans, Quote
greg g Posted April 8, 2011 Report Posted April 8, 2011 Suggestion, you fellows should try to publish your itenerary from when you leave Chez' Adams. If you post your intended route and tenative ETA at planned stops, you might get some nearby folks to meet up with you. Or check out the members map and see who might be along your route. If you were passing through this area, I might even set aside a couple days to tag a long so to speak. Any way have a great time at the Adams's and have a safe journey. Quote
bamfordsgarage Posted April 8, 2011 Author Report Posted April 8, 2011 Thanks Greg, will do. Heading for the airport soon, will start a new thread for the return trip. Quote
