My wife and I recently did a photo shoot at the Ace Cafe in London.

I've re-worked one of the shots by photoshopping out anything 'modern looking', adding a border and making the colours a lot 'warmer' for more of a vintage feel.

Here's the final version.

I'm hoping it looks like a shot from Miami in 1950.

Does "modern looking" include a license plate that reads "rock the joint.com"? :)

Nice photo, by the way.

Well spotted, Tod.

Here's the original picture.

How many changes can you see?

the chairs, the stuff in the windowsof the building, the building security exterior lighting, the signal flashers under your bumper gaurds, and the hue of the colors. and looks like some subtle airbrushing of the bloke's physic......

Very nice work...the subject of making "new" old photos is very interesting to me. It's very difficult to get it just right...

In addition to our world looking vastly different, all I can figure is we just look different than people did back in the day. Less ethnic, a little more meat on our bones than they had. And it's about impossible to get the haircuts just right.

I haven't seen too many photos that pull it off completely. I thought I found one in NYC recently, but it was actually from 1952. I would have sworn it was a re-creation with actors, it was that perfect.

The optics of our digital cameras aren't the same as a point and shoot 620 would have been, depth of field is different...just less "perfect".

I am not trying to demean your effort, it's a great photo. You have taken on a challenge that's very difficult to attain and met it quite squarely with success.

I think I see where Robin set his picture up. When was the building painted white??

That's the place.

And yes, the picture was taken to the left of the building.

The building has a fascinating history - especially for 'petrolheads' like us, as it was a transport cafe that was adopted by youths and bikers as their hang-out in the 1950s.

It's a legendary venue - it featured in the film 'The Leather Boys'.

My mother used to go there and she tells me stories of riding on the back of Triumphs and Nortons, wearing an army surplus flying jacket.

Several years ago, Mark Wilsmore decided that the building (that was being used as a tire-fitting center) should be recognised for its history and set about returning it to being a cafe.

He bought the building and waited for the tire company's lease to expire.

During that time he set up a temporary building in the car park and would hold bike meets every weekend, sell t-shirts and spread the word.

Now he runs a successful business, welcomes classic bikes and cars, stages gigs with bands and has breathed life back into the old place.

it's an inspirational story.
