BulldogTom Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 OK, so the '52 started up last night. It ran for about 20 seconds. I had to turn it off because I learned something very important..... ....you have to connect the oil pressure gauge or when the truck is running it sprays oil all over. Go ahead and laugh... I did. This is reason number 27 why accountants should not be given a wrench. Thanks to everyone who gave me advice on how to get the truck started. Tom Lodi, CA Quote
41/53dodges Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 well, congrats on getting it running. i did something similar to you at first, i forgot to tighten the oil filter down. you see where that goes. Quote
NiftyFifty Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 LOL....your poor cab....congrats on your run! Wish me luck today...just picked up my new fabbed gas tank and am going to try and start the truck for the first time since I owned it. Quote
buds truck Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 think of it this way.... the oil helps keep the cab from getting rusty.... Quote
ggdad1951 Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 just don't tell BP or the gov't about your spill! Quote
Dave72dt Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Just say you were flushing the line of debris. Quote
Jerry Roberts Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 Thats great Tom , I mean about it starting . Now tell us why it wouldn't start the other day and what you did to fix it . Quote
BulldogTom Posted July 14, 2010 Author Report Posted July 14, 2010 We found TDC and then moved the wires to the right spots on the cap. They were off by one position. It fired right up (with a little gas added to the carb) once we had the wires in the correct firing order. Quote
Dan Babb Posted July 14, 2010 Report Posted July 14, 2010 We've all done things like that. Welcome to the club. My favorite 'oh-****' moment of my car hobby career. Few years ago, I was building a Shelby Cobra replica. Didn't have the body work done yet and didn't have much of the body hardware attached (hood handles weren't on yet). My younger daughter couldn't wait to take a ride, so I strapped her in the car and took this picture. We turned the corner, hit the gas and the hood went about 15 feet over our heads...hit the ground about 20 feet behind us. I forgot to take the hood off the car before leaving the house. Thankfully, it flew high enough and nobody was following. My daughter was laughing her butt off. Thought it was the coolest thing ever. Quote
Allen I. Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 Congrats on getting her running. A couple of summers ago I had the distributor apart a few times. I am embarassed to say how many times I buttoned it up and tried starting it up with the rotor in my pocket (for safe keeping of course). Quote
pflaming Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 We all have a story. I torqued down the head then hit the starter and it went 'thud'. Removed the head and found a head bold in one of the cylinders. So... join the club! The stories make the project! Make a video, love to hear it run and congradulations!! Well done! Quote
48Dodger Posted July 15, 2010 Report Posted July 15, 2010 lol......and you wanted me to post your story! Tom called me and was laughin' tellin me about the oil going everywhere....I was laughing cuz I could just see his kid crushing the pedal and thinkin "YEA! Got this thing RUNNIN! Let's drive!" and Tom franticly tellin him to "shut it down! shut it down!" while gettin nailed with the slippery stuff. lol......that's how I saw it in my head anyway. Can't wait to see the kid driving it soon. 48D Quote
