HalfdollarMayflower Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I guess you've tried Lebaron Bonney and SMS Auto Fabrics...will look and see what I can come up with, although I've had good luck with those two suppliers. What color/fabric are you looking for and how much do you need? Gary Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 amount..not sure as it is the wagon..right now am looking for pattern and color...I will want enough to do the seat backs an bottoms, front door panels inserts and headliner ...I am partial to solid color tweed and my color could be a medium jade green..I have been sitting here talking it over with mums and I think I have convinced myself to change the interior color a few shades as matching the exterior body color is going to be very rough it appears..I spent hours on picking out the fabric for the headliner and seats for the 54...and I had samples in my hand and the car on site when doing it..while I usually can see paints in my mind, fabrics just confuse me all to hang..and greens so far have proven to be a bit hard to get my hands on here locally for a look see... Plymouthy Adams Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 (edited) nope..some of it ws that high...that was marked by the cough cough..trust me..I will not be shopping there...lol Edited July 1, 2010 by Tim Adams Quote
Flatie46 Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I'd be keeping the old Indian blanket at that price. When I get to the interior on my car I'd like to go back close to what it was but maybe not exactly. It was originally red plaid, I don't think it'd be hard to find what I want. That's a ways down the road though. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 to me, picking out the fabric is tougher than any custom paint you would want to do..just too many variables in fabric Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 I've been looking for fabric I like for the convertible. First was going to do all vinyl in maroon or dark red. Now thinking two colors of cloth.......maroon and something. It was maroon and grey when new. But the car was Sumac Red, rather than the current yellow. You can find all sorts of cloth at a retail fabric store like Joann and others. But that fabric is not U V resistant, so over time sunlight would take a toll, especially in an open car. So, I try to locate wholesale fabric suppliers in big cities when I visit there, to see what they have available. Many will sell to an individual. The best way to locate these places is ask an auto upholstry shop where they get their material. Or - check with auto shops to see what left-over material they have on their rack. Some have a bunch if they've been around a while. Probably be glad to sell some of that old stuff. I did get a couple samples from SMS, I forget the price, seemed a bit high to me, but may have to go there after all. Meanwhile, I'll keep looking. Quote
Powerhouse Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 if you have a fabric district in a big city nearby...check it out. I know of one in L.A. and in N.Y.C. PLENTY of suitable fabrics there and none over $25 a yard..and that's high. $249 a yard is just DISGUSTING! They should be shot. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 I have found some fabrics local in some very nice heavy fabric that is well suited to the automobile...and in quanities to do upwards of two cars...but finding green is a killer..guess these are out of favor today...reds, blues and browns are everywhere...most of these fabrics are going for about $4-6 a yard and are in 1.5 to 5.0 bolts...but plenty of bolts to chose from making it a good source..its the killer green that's got me....I have sent a PM to Lou to see what the name of the place in the next big town is as he shops there off and on...maybe I can yet find what I need..but I still feel it is going to require a interior paint to undergo a color change a few shades...I cannot seem to get a yardage quote from the upholester...guess that is not good for his side of the business. bearheart Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 Try Automotive Interiors at 800 814-7533, ask for Diane. They've got all kinds of "stock" materials but when I couldn't find anything that looked more vintage, closer to my original stuff she dug up something that came much closer....got what I wanted at a fair price. Very, very happy with what I got. Not a perfect match to original but very close and has a vintage look. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 2, 2010 Author Report Posted July 2, 2010 I will give Diane a call and see if she can come up with what I want..I am thinking, (probably my problem) that I want a medium Jade color...I am not looking for original as that was a brown vinyl..this is Georgia..you do not want vinyl..wife #2 was at the house this evening..she is a little sew and sew...she said lots of luck matching the color of my car..I love the color did not have a clue at the time as to interior fabric being a prob...live and learn..will get this eventually..just going to take time and I appreciate all source you folks are listing.. Were I you, since you've got a convertible, I'd go with a good synth-leather vinyl. Actually considered 100% synth-leather for my own more door's door panels and seats. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 2, 2010 Author Report Posted July 2, 2010 between p24-1953 and Lou Earle..I got the name of the fabric shop up town..good news is Lou told me thay have a store even closer than Macon..I stopped by this evening..I have found two possible fabrics..will have to bounce these about a bit..no vinyls/naughahyde though..no one stop shopping here... however I have been to Michaels and Hobby Lobby about 6 times specifically looking for supplies for my creative side..so far they batting 1000 for not having squat..oh well..move along Betty.. Frank Elder Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 I can't even imagine sittin' on plastic/naugas, etc where you are at Tim...3 years in nas meridian cured me of that:eek:good luck on your search! Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 3, 2010 Author Report Posted July 3, 2010 fabric swatches direct light and then in the sun..outsides is one fabric...the center two are the same fabric..I like the middles best..decent match of the paint..now keep in mind that the paint is a tad off in color due to monitors..the error is across the color spectrum..so all colors colors are equally unequal..(???) the vinyl will be bolster, on the door panels alsong with the cloth and carpet on the bottom, 2ill be the entire kickpanel, will cover the cubbies and be on the rear panels Quote
Young Ed Posted July 5, 2010 Report Posted July 5, 2010 Tim I like the green in the first and last picture better. Are you going to make it all green? Perhaps a different color with the green as the insert material? Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted July 5, 2010 Author Report Posted July 5, 2010 as we all know you had your choice of interiors in these wagons as long as it was brown...being a 51, they sprayed the brown right over the gray woodgrain dash..talk about a waste..I an not that fond of the original brown..the first and last pictures are the same swatch, middle two are the same swatch and is tweed.. the other is a crushed velour style fabric in sage color..I like the fabric real well..not so sure how the seat would look though...I picked out four fabrics...two I put aside when I saw them out in the natural light.. I have had a heck of a time matching that color on the interior...I was thinking I may have to change to color of the interior but I will still want to stay in a green..I want a triple color interior and all must compliment each other...0h yeah...the glass is also a green tint... Richie Hodge is sending me a link in a few minutes to the place he gets his fabric..great prices, excellent service and wide selection..so will see what they have...the fabrics you see here are each 20.00 a yard as is the marine grade vinyl.. MiltYergens Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 When I was young, I had neighbors who had a dark green 1951 Wagon, the standard 2 dr, sliding back window setup. I remember the dash and garnish moldings were burgundy. What was real interesting was there was a western print motif like you'd expect from fifties cowboy pajamas with brands, guns spurs on a plain background. I don't remember if it was fabric or vinyl and but i do know it was original with the car... I know who owns this car now and also know for a fact that he's done nothing to it... so if I visit him I'll get a photo. Quote
michael.warshaw Posted July 8, 2010 Report Posted July 8, 2010 i neded fabric for my p15 project. and of coarse the easy way to do it is pay lebaron bonney 82 a yard for a pefect match to the origanal. i spoke to someone at lb and she said that they have the fabric made for them. since i am a new yorker, having the large fabric district within ten minutes from my home, i should have looked into it with the wholesalers i know. i have just showed the lb sample to my friend and he said that, the material costs lb about 5 to 10 a yard to make and they sell it for 82. it is crazy but to me, as im building a all origanal car, so i wanted to perfect match. my friend in that industry said he could the lb sample send it to china and they will copy it exactly and it will cost 9 dollars a yard after they make their money off it. so bassically, people who buy from lb and sms, kind of take the easy way out, and rightfully so its the easy way out, in the end if you can afford its the best way b.c. its so easy, i had the material in one day. just my 2 pennies. desoto1939 Posted July 9, 2010 Report Posted July 9, 2010 Mike, Since you are going after to have an original restored car are you going to have new glass put into the car? If yes then to have an original restoration then you will need to also have the proper date code stamp on each piece of glass and also you will need to note that on certain pieces you read the code from the outside lookinto the car and for other pieces you read the date code from inside the car looking out the window. Also each piece has these date codes so if you want an original then you need to have this done also. But rememebr you still do not have an all original car. The car was only original when it was first made. you now have a restored car that has been brought back to a form of originality so the best that you could ever get would be 99.99% because some part will be an after market item. Even the wires that have the cloth coverings witht he appropriate strikes on the cloth covering is new wire that has the plastic covering the wire and then the cloth has been pulled over the wire. The old wire did not have this is was just cloth covered. Rich Hartung Quote
