Young Ed Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 Reg that spitsfire is a 218 correct? Mostly stock? I know the 2bbl would have been on a 230 not a 218. The engine I have and plan to use is a 218. How much trouble shooting did you do on the 2bbl? Quote
hkestes41 Posted June 10, 2010 Report Posted June 10, 2010 I have the Langdon's headers on my engine and 2.25 inch pipes running pretty close to what you show in your photo. There is a cross over pipe in the system just aft of the crossmember. The mufflers used are just off the shelf 14 inch no name turbo style mufflers and I think mine sounds pretty good. Quote

She'd been laid up for a few weeks with an engine transplant so I just put the 1 bbl back on so I could. Quote

Yours sounds great. Does it break out into a totally different brapping trombone sound under power at higher rpm's. Maybe the difference is 1 carb vs. 2 carbs. Quote

Reg, The tone doesn't change too much as the rpm's increase but the volume does increase a little but not bad. I think it really hits a sweet spot around 55 - 60 mph (with OD). No rapping when I let off and use engine braking either. I think the cross over pipe has a lot to do with it. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 where exactly did you put the h-pipe in? Quote
hkestes41 Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 where exactly did you put the h-pipe in? Fred, I just went and looked and it is a little further back than I remembered. The H pipe, cross over, balance tube what ever you want to call it is about half way between the cross member and the parking brake band. Quote
Reg Evans Posted June 11, 2010 Report Posted June 11, 2010 My cross over is right behind the transmission. I didn't notice any difference after I took it back and had it added. Quote

Had to run a couple of errands today so I took the camera with me to get a couple of clips so you could here it at more than an idle. Both of these are with both windows down and the cowl vent open since it is almost 100 today, so there is some road/wind noise and my clutch pedal is rubbing on the floorboard so that is what the noise is when I shift. First on is from a stop light through the shift into OD, the second is from about 40 to getting on the highway at a shown 60 which according to the GPS is actually 68. Last sorry for the shaky video, was holding the camera, steering, and shifting. Edited June 12, 2010 by hkestes41 Quote

Different mufflers I guess. Thanks for the sound tracks. Quote
Greenbomb Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 Don; I really like the way your car sounds inside. The exhaust sounds good, too. Quote
Cpt.Fred Posted June 13, 2010 Report Posted June 13, 2010 thanks for the info on the crossover pipe. some guy over here has made detailed drag strip timings with different exaust setups, that was mufflers, glaspacks, straight pipes with and without h-pipe AND with different h-pipe locations. guess he got paid for that:rolleyes: however, if i remenber correctly the best times were with straight pipes and a crosspipe directly behind the transmission. i have to dig, might have the charts somewhere on the computer... it's of no use anyway because it would be too loud for a daily driver. i like the sound of your cars, great! mine is a little rougher, but i didn't put much work in there because the factory manifold will be changed to dual exhaust as soon as i have the money... p24-1953 Posted July 1, 2010 Author Report Posted July 1, 2010 Do you gain anything by just installing a milled head? Quote
greg g Posted July 1, 2010 Report Posted July 1, 2010 Yes if you look at the specs over the years, the HP goes up as the CR increases. the 230 goes from 105 at 6.7 to 2 in 42 to 135 at 8 to 1 in 59. Was all of ti from compression not likely but I would bet most of the increase was from more squeeze. Quote
Frank Elder Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 I know you have posted this before Greg, but at what compression do you think higher octane gas should be used and why? Quote
greg g Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 Well, my old Kawasaki runs 9.7 to 1 and eeds more tha regular or it pings. So I would thik 9.0 to 1 or so might like mid grade over regular. Quote
martybose Posted July 3, 2010 Report Posted July 3, 2010 When we decided to make my 230 9 to 1 compression, my machinist said that I should always run 91 octane in it, because flatheads are inclined to knock a bit. Based on the experiments on my timing hill, he's right! Marty Quote
