dontknowitall Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Is there a lot of difference between a P26 (1955) engine and a 218 T173 1950. I know cu is different, but what about fitting it in a Dodge B2B 1/2 Ton Can I use the P26 with a standard Dodge B2B gearbox? Its just that I can buy one which is running , just in case my 218 has issues with being rebored etc.. Just as a spare? Quote
Young Ed Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Are they both 23 or 25in blocks? Do you know what kind of trans was behind the 55 engine? Only issue I can think of is if the 55 was a powerflite model the pilot bushing might not have a proper bore. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 9, 2010 Author Report Posted May 9, 2010 The 218 is a Canadian long block..25+inch, not sure what the P26 is, will measure tomorrow. and see what trans was used..The Bell housing is still on it. As for the comments, Thanks!, but I am already lost when you talk about a Pilot Bushing (type of airoplain?) and the bore bit.... I am sorry, you have to explain this to a total dummy.. ME! greg g Posted May 9, 2010 Report Posted May 9, 2010 my 56 engine is a p 28, are you sure its a 55??? Wouldn't that make a p26 block from a 54 Plymouth? If 54, it was a change over year, some had 218's some were 230. You will need to measure the stroke. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 9, 2010 Author Report Posted May 9, 2010 It shows here: P26, 230 cu..23 Inch http://www.t137.com/registry/help/otherengines/pengines.html Have not measured yet the block as I am at work..: my 56 engine is a p 28, are you sure its a 55??? Tony WestOZ Posted May 9, 2010 Report Posted May 9, 2010 P26 in Australia were used in 55 and 56 and are the 230cu", 3 1/4" bore. It would pay to measure as the 251 was also available at the same time. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 9, 2010 Author Report Posted May 9, 2010 hi Tony, if needed, would I be able to use this one in my truck? P26 in Australia were used in 55 and 56 and are the 230cu", 3 1/4" bore.It would pay to measure as the 251 was also available at the same time. Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted May 9, 2010 Report Posted May 9, 2010 You could but you will need to modify the front engine mount and extend the radiator side support panels to allow for the 2" shorter motor. Do you still have the KEW motor? Quote
bach4660 Posted May 9, 2010 Report Posted May 9, 2010 also watch the oil pans, the cars and some (all) 251's have the sump backwards. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 9, 2010 Author Report Posted May 9, 2010 Nope, the Kew I got it turning free, and then sold it...The problem is that the reconditioner guy is hesitant reconditioning my 218 engine. It took a lot of talking, finally he is goin to do it.. I just buy this P26 engine as aspare knowing it was going.. $150 bucks is ok for that. dontknowitall Posted May 9, 2010 Author Report Posted May 9, 2010 Thanks for that, this morning I am going to have another look at the engine and take some pics.. also watch the oil pans, the cars and some (all) 251's have the sump backwards. Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 also watch the oil pans, the cars and some (all) 251's have the sump backwards. Good point. Might be hard to find a short block truck sump. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 10, 2010 Author Report Posted May 10, 2010 (edited) Here is the block, its 23 inch Good point. Might be hard to find a short block truck sump. Edited May 10, 2010 by dontknowitall Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 10, 2010 Author Report Posted May 10, 2010 something missing on the head, see the 2 bolts Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Well I`ll be, the sump is the right way round. One thing I had not thought of is the exhaust. The clutch pedal might interfear wih the rear exit manifold. With the 2 bolts, are they the ones at the rear. I think thats were the throttle crossover goes on the LHD cars. Quote
Jim Gaspard Posted May 10, 2010 Report Posted May 10, 2010 Anyone have a source for the throw-away-type oil filter canister? Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 11, 2010 Author Report Posted May 11, 2010 ok, so whats the verdict? will it fit or not? Quote
Tony WestOZ Posted May 11, 2010 Report Posted May 11, 2010 I will fit but for me its to much work specially as 250 long blocks turn up from time to time. Quote
dontknowitall Posted May 12, 2010 Author Report Posted May 12, 2010 like, do i have to do a lot of changes to it ? Quote
TodFitch Posted May 12, 2010 Report Posted May 12, 2010 Anyone have a source for the throw-away-type oil filter canister? Roberts online catalog shows them: http://www.robertsmotorparts.com/car_parts.asp?Action=search&c=Cars+%2D+Engine+Area+%26+Related+Parts A year or two ago I got an email from a company in India that claimed to be manufacturing them. I guess they thought I was a vendor even though I think it is pretty clear from my web site that I am not. I have long since discarded the email and don't remember the URL for their web site but I would not be too surprised if they are the source for vendors like Roberts who still carry that filter. Quote
