BeBop138 Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Well I just finished painting the manifold and had it hanging on a hook---damn hook broke, down goes the manifold and brakes off the end ear. Of course not in one piece. Makes it harder to repair, so I may have Moose make me a set of headers. I can weld but never have done cast. It might not be fixable. Take a look at the pic----damn---had to rant:mad: Quote
aero3113 Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 I think you may be able to bring it to a welding shop and they can build up the metal then bring it to a machine shop and they can mill and drill it for you. Quote
Andydodge Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Depending on where you are located i'd try to find a blacksmith or someone experienced in cast iron welding or wrought iron work...........when I had my split exhaust manifolds done one had a piece missing just like that, except there was no pieces........came up perfect........good luck, andyd Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 or for 75 bucks shipped i will send you another one. Quote
JIPJOBXX Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 75 dollars sound like the best bet to me!!! Quote
thrashingcows Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 That really sucks. I've tried welding cast and it has never worked out for me. I've tried all the "ways" I could find but has not worked for me. $75 for another manifold is a pretty good deal I think, cost more to have a shop weld that up. Maybe keep the broken one for a spare to fix at a later date. Quote
adam_knox Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Bummer Lee! Gravity is usually a downer. Looking at the pic it looks like as possible save if maybe you found a wide washer, maybe the bolt could hold it if you did need to use it as a spare. Although it would be an annoying gamble as manifold for me are a pain to swap out if the bolt couldn't keep a tight seal. Hope you get the problem solved before the big winter unthaw. Only 3 weeks until daylight savings! Quote

Captain Neon Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 If my engine ever has to come out, I intend for it to go back in with dual exhaust. Quote
BeBop138 Posted February 24, 2010 Author Report Posted February 24, 2010 or for 75 bucks shipped i will send you another one. Dez, I do have a spare, but the one that broke is a split manifold. Moose had an idea to make it work. Spacer and a large washer, get it in place and tighten, the port should seal as that area is fine----give it a shot, no one will see it on the firewall side anyway. If it leaks we go with headers by Moose:D.............thanks.......Lee Quote

aero3113 Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Try to find the thickest washer you can so when you torque it down it does not bend. Quote
dezeldoc Posted February 24, 2010 Report Posted February 24, 2010 Oh in that case for a split manifold 200 shipped. Weld a little riser on the washer where it will contact the manifold, that way it will exert more pressure on the manifold and not want to walk on the manifold. Quote
BeBop138 Posted February 25, 2010 Author Report Posted February 25, 2010 Oh in that case for a split manifold 200 shipped. Weld a little riser on the washer where it will contact the manifold, that way it will exert more pressure on the manifold and not want to walk on the manifold. Pretty much what we will do---thought I would take a piece of 1/2 inch pipe and cut an opening to tuck it as close to the broken part and then put one of the extra 1/8th inch thick washers I got laying around and snug it up. BeBop138 Posted March 2, 2010 Author Report Posted March 2, 2010 Here is how I fixed the problem--took a lug nut and cut it to fit the broken area and welded the flat washer on it, I think it will hold...........Thanks Quote
aero3113 Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 That looks like it will work great, good thinking ! Quote
greg g Posted March 2, 2010 Report Posted March 2, 2010 leave the nuts a bit loose to allow for some movement during heating and cooling. You can get the conical washers and nuts from Vintage powerwagon which allows for that also. Quote
