Joe Flanagan Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 The curved metal piece that makes up the lower radiator hose connection on my P18 is badly rusted and can't be re-used. Is it OK to replace the entire run with an appropriately shaped hose, eliminating the metal pipe? Don't know if the metal piece was a cost saving measure or if it was to prevent collapse of the lower hose. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Joe as long as its a radiator type hose I would think you'd be fine. I believe Don C also replaced his elbow with a piece of similar shaped exhaust pipe. Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 It's been 15 years I've been using a molded hose on the bottom. I was allowed behind the counter to find one that looked like it would fit. We don't need no steenking metal elbows! Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Not exhaust pipe. Stainless steel tubing pre formed to a a 90 elbow. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 there is a stock rubber pre curved application that does away with the metal U-pipe...should be avaialable by asking at the parts counter.. Quote
Young Ed Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Good call Tim. From napa listed as a 49 plymouth lower hose. Cut to fit. Hose - Radiator Lower Product Line: NAPA Belts & Hoses Part Number: NBH 7011 Price: Price Unit : : 18.69 Each Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 Well, I'm so well known by now at the steenking Auto Zone that they just let me go back among the shelves, too. I found a preformed hose that will work but I didn't want to go and use it if it was going to be a harebrained scheme. So I guess I'm good to go. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 Just out of curiosity, Don, where did you find that elbow? Quote
Don Coatney Posted February 19, 2010 Report Posted February 19, 2010 Just out of curiosity, Don, where did you find that elbow? I worked in the food industry as a Maintenance Manager for 25 years. Pays to scour the trash bins. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 19, 2010 Author Report Posted February 19, 2010 A worthy pursuit, sir. I engage in the same activity frequently myself. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Was that pipe there to keep the hose from collapsing? I was wondering myself why it was there. Tom Quote
Frank Elder Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Maybe they hadn't figured out how to make a curved one yet.....that would not collapse. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Frankie is more on the money than you think...prior to preformed hoses there was the generic ribbed hose that was supposed to bend yet not collaspe..purchase by length..these are still available and used yet today but in my opinion are tacky looking given the fact that there are so so many preformed that one can easily match up for a custom fit..if you have a local supply house that will allow you to look behind the counter as they do for me..matching is rarely a problem...no offense to those that use these hoses as you may not have had to option to look in the back for suitable smoothie..remember..lower rad hoses should have an anti collaspe spring installed.. Quote
P-12 Tommy Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Thanks for the insight guys! Tom Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 20, 2010 Author Report Posted February 20, 2010 Tim, is that spring something that is built into the hose or do you get it separately and slip it in? Quote
Niel Hoback Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Hoses listed for lower use have the spring in them. Universal bendable hoses have them molded in. Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 I wonder if there's a piece of plumbing drain pipe, or some such that could be used for that elbow. Quote
Joe Flanagan Posted February 20, 2010 Author Report Posted February 20, 2010 The preformed hose I got to use for the lower does not have a spring in it so I will be returning it and looking for one that does. If I can't find one, I'll be looking for some kind of metal elbow like the original. I'm thinking large conduit or maybe even part of an exhaust system. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted February 20, 2010 Report Posted February 20, 2010 Joe...quick trip to the j-yard..grab a lower hose and take the spring out..turning in direction of the coil twist one can easily remove and insert a spring.. Quote
