The curved metal piece that makes up the lower radiator hose connection on my P18 is badly rusted and can't be re-used. Is it OK to replace the entire run with an appropriately shaped hose, eliminating the metal pipe? Don't know if the metal piece was a cost saving measure or if it was to prevent collapse of the lower hose.

Joe as long as its a radiator type hose I would think you'd be fine. I believe Don C also replaced his elbow with a piece of similar shaped exhaust pipe.

It's been 15 years I've been using a molded hose on the bottom. I was allowed behind the counter to find one that looked like it would fit. We don't need no steenking metal elbows!

Good call Tim. From napa listed as a 49 plymouth lower hose. Cut to fit.

Well, I'm so well known by now at the steenking Auto Zone that they just let me go back among the shelves, too. I found a preformed hose that will work but I didn't want to go and use it if it was going to be a harebrained scheme. So I guess I'm good to go.

Frankie is more on the money than you think...prior to preformed hoses there was the generic ribbed hose that was supposed to bend yet not collaspe..purchase by length..these are still available and used yet today but in my opinion are tacky looking given the fact that there are so so many preformed that one can easily match up for a custom fit..if you have a local supply house that will allow you to look behind the counter as they do for me..matching is rarely a problem...no offense to those that use these hoses as you may not have had to option to look in the back for suitable smoothie..remember..lower rad hoses should have an anti collaspe spring installed..

The preformed hose I got to use for the lower does not have a spring in it so I will be returning it and looking for one that does. If I can't find one, I'll be looking for some kind of metal elbow like the original. I'm thinking large conduit or maybe even part of an exhaust system.
