Rustytoolss Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 Has anyone installed A/C on their car? How did it work out? Did it kill the power of the car? Was it a mistake???? Quote
BobT-47P15 Posted September 11, 2009 Report Posted September 11, 2009 There's a guy in a nearby town who put a/c on his flathead six. Haven't seen him lately to hear about how it works out. Next time I see him, I'll try to ask. Quote
47heaven Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I can't see how it would work. These things get hot enough running without it. Quote
Young Ed Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I've seen it. I believe Lou is running it on one of his cars. Quote
Andydodge Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 Well theres a guy in Sydney, Australia I know that has a 48 Dodge 3W Coupe and he is building a new engine for it with an Edgy head, twin Carter/Webers & Fenton Headers and I have seen pics of the air conditioning and power steering setup he is including........using a serpentine belt system......with a good new style radiator, correct thermostat and aftermarket electric fans it should be fine......so I'd say that so long as your cooling system is up to spec power air or steer should be possible.......andyd Quote
grey beard Posted September 12, 2009 Report Posted September 12, 2009 I cannot understand why so many on this forum speak to overheating problems in their flatheads, unless some of these water jackets are full of sediment. I admit to being from the truck side, and mebby our radiators are larger, but with a fresh engine - clean water jacket and distribution tube, etc. - and a clean radiator, I went through the past summer, idled in parades and in traffic, and put about 1,000 miles on the unit, and never saw the temperature gauge go above 180, and I watched it like a hawk. My thermostat is a 180 degree unit, and my antifreeze is a 50/50 mix. Couldn't want a cooler, nicer running motor for any old beastie. I believe there is plenty of margin on my cooling system to support the added heat of an A/C condenser unit out front. If it DID create any heating problems, I'd remove the bladed fan and add an electric pusher, out front of it all - plenty of room there, behind the grille, too. Can't speak to the parasitic load on the engine, from a power standpoint, and I believe that was the original question in this threa. JMHO Good Luck Quote
Rustytoolss Posted September 12, 2009 Author Report Posted September 12, 2009 If anyone has pictures of A/C on a mopar flathead could you post them ? And even the car with P/S Thanks Quote
grey beard Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Here ya go, just like you asked for. Don't know whose it is, but it has dual voltage AND A/C. Pretty sanitary, I think. Someone on this forum posted this pic some years back . . . Quote
Frank Elder Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 That belong's to Lou Earle according to the tag. Quote
Captain Neon Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Cool! He's got both 12v and 6v installed too. Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Lou's car is running two distinct power supplies on this car...12 and 6...one Generator..on alternator..plus as you see the AC and a few other things..not mention a few other engine performance parts and OD Quote
Don Coatney Posted September 13, 2009 Report Posted September 13, 2009 Lou Earls air conditioned car was built by the brother of Richis Hodge. Here are a few more pictures. The spark plug wires do not have insulation where they connect to the spark plugs. But they have lots of spark. Dont ask me how I know this. Quote
