1941 D19 - Need fuel pump & master cylinder

Recommended Posts

We just started digging into the "new" D19 this week. First up, we need a fuel pump & a master cylinder. I'm a newb, so I'm looking for suggestions on where to get these parts. Does anyone make current replacements that fit, or will pretty much every part I buy for the D19 have to come off of a parts car from the era?

Thanks,

-Garrett

I don't have a Dodge parts book but the equivalent parts for the same year Plymouth are generally available. Personally, I'd rebuild what you have if the cores are any good. Especially the fuel pump.

Modern fuel is unkind to older rubber materials and you should avoid NOS parts when looking for the flexible fuel hose and you should make sure the diaphragm in your pump is compatible with modern fuel additives.

For fuel pump rebuilding kits contact Antique Auto Parts Cellar.

For sleeving brake cylinders, I've had good luck with Sierra Specialty Automotive.

Contact information for both of these are on my web site's vendor page: http://www.ply33.com/Parts/vendor

Antique Auto Parts Cellar is actually like 25-30mins from my house, so I'll probably give them a ring. Andy Bernbaum (from your vendor list) is also about 5 mins from my office, so maybe I'll check him out too.

Thanks for the leads.

If you are using a single stage Fulel pump then an AC 588 should work in your car. These are avialble at any good auto supply house such as NAPA, Auto Zone.

I would also suggest that you put in an electric FP at the rear of the car. This is a backup to the mechanical and helps if you ever have a vapor lock and also helps to send fule up to the carb when the car has been sitting for a while. Use a small toggle switch to activate the electric fp. This way you can push the gas to the carb befor trying to start the car and youdo not have to grind the engine this helps to prime the carb.

Just my two cents for what its worth,

Roberts Is Better Also in MA. Whitepost restorations does master cylinders.

Just mentioned in another post the White Post Restorations is great. They did a master cylinder for me and it is great. Turn around time was very fast and their cost included return shipping. Cheaper than trying to buy a new one.

napa has all that stuff..fuel pumps are $45 but without the glass bottle. new build too. also you can get them with the glass filter too.

many parts stores dont have parts lists going way back..for instance NAPA only goes to 1950...but most motor parts fit wat back to 1940....so i ask to look up a 50 or 52 ply for needed aprts.

Thanks. I'll probably go the route of buying the new one since rebuild kits are ~$50 (plus our labor)....also, the fuel pump we just pulled off the car isn't the original one, so that makes a rebuild less attractive to me.

So, I guess "AC 588" is the part number that I'm looking for? Does anyone know if that's the glass filter model? I'd like to at least keep things looking original.
