Robin (UK) Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 (edited) Hi Guys, The Chrysler in this picture is in need of a new exhaust manifold. I'm guessing the right hand drive manifold will be slightly different to standard. Can anyone confirm? Also, can anyone help with the necessary part? It's a straight 8. Thanks. Robin. Robin (UK) Posted May 20, 2009 Author Report Posted May 20, 2009 Sorry, it's an 8. I'll edit the initial post. R. Quote
normanpitkin Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 2 ideas spring to mind,1) south africa ,maybe an old rhd chrysler there.2)there is a process (oxygen free welding i think) that can fix cast iron manifolds in London ,BUT,I would imagine ,insanely expensive! They are castironwelding in greenwich, would be interesting to know their price!! Quote
Young Ed Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 There was a set of straight 8 manifolds in the second to last MN street rod mag. You'd have to confirm that RHD was the same as left though Quote
Plymouthy Adams Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 I would think the manifold could be saved unless it was in many pieces..as the damage and to what extent was not mentioned.. something like a crack can be drill stopped, beveled, preheated, welded, and slowly allowed to cool whil placed in an oven or hooded grille as you lower the temperture over time..it is the rapid cooling of the cast iron after welding that makes them brittle and subject to cracking immediately afterwards..also if you have a manifold that has been repaired and try to install without checking the flatness of the mounts..you are not doing yourself or the part justice..it should be checked ... I recommend it be be surfaced ground prior to install. Quote
PatS.... Posted May 20, 2009 Report Posted May 20, 2009 If it helps, my 1949 Chrysler Parts Manual lists the 8 cylinder C46 and C47 Exhaust Manifold and Heat Control Assy US Built part # 1311818 Exhaust Manifold and Heat Control Assy center L.H.D. part # 1140001 I'm not sure what the "center" means on the L.H.D. part. Dodgeb4ya Posted May 21, 2009 Report Posted May 21, 2009 Here are pictures of this hard to find 8 cyl.manifold. They don't repair easily. They are long and delicate. I've replaced several of these over the years for myself and other people's cars. They crack because of thick and thin sections and stress- improperly assembled exhaust pipes ect. I keep a couple extras for my 8 cylinder chryslers. I have one now thats ticking. Go to the "Postwar" 46-8 Chrysler site and post questions. Last week a guy in the same situation just got an exhaust manifold from a member! Talk about luck! Bob Quote

normanpitkin Posted May 22, 2009 Report Posted May 22, 2009 i spoke to a very nice gentleman at greenwich today and he confirmed they can certainly weld a cast iron manifold!! He said that a photo of the offending part emailed to him will be studied and a price idea will be given.Am interested as well since i think i have a crack in my exhaust manifold starting too, damn it! The Chrysler 8 cyl. manifolds are weldable depending on where the repair needs to be done. If the main oval vertical center section is cracked bad-don't weld it. If it's borken on one the end wings- go for it. Both intake and exhaust manifolds will need to b machined together after the welding to get the block surface flat and-also after welding the tolerance for misalignment of the manifold mounting holes is very exact. The welder needs to have the block/and or car while doing the repairs. Also the 2 end pieces are next to impossible to remove from the center section , "Mitchell's" has been trying to sell one on Ebay for nearly a year now. They are a tapered press fit and corrosion prevents easy removal of the 2 ends. Best bet is to find a good used one IMO. Bob Bob Quote
Robin (UK) Posted May 27, 2009 Author Report Posted May 27, 2009 Thanks for all the info and advice, guys. I'll forward everything on to the shop. It's not my car, so I don't know the whole story, but I believe that the manifold has already been welded twice by a specialist and has failed both times. They suspect that the casting is too porous or it's just reached the end of its useful life. I'll keep you posted if I get any more news. Quote
Don Coatney Posted May 28, 2009 Report Posted May 28, 2009 Robin; If the Crashler owner is not interested in originality my guess is that forum member "Moose" could build him a new one. Quote
