My intent for my '50 Plymouth was to have the experience of having a "new" 1950 car (with a few period hop up speed parts) as a daily driver. I've only farmed out the body and paint work and the engine block machine shop work. I've done the rest of the car myself to the best of my ability. It's no points car or trailer queen by any stretch of the imagination. I've driven it daily and through six different states, from Idaho to Oklahoma. I've even covered it with salt on the Bonneville Slat Flats. It now has a dozen paint chips, half a dozen scratches here and there, and two chips in the windsheild. One thing I know for certain, the car is no fun at all when it is sitting under it's cover in the garage. But when it comes to life and I'm behind the wheel, it is a great pleasure. I see no point in keeping a #1 car in storage. My car just doesn't feel right unless it's covered with bugs.

Well I did pay for an expensive repaint of my car. asically I bought the car fromt he original owner and it was straight and nearly rust free. The under carraige looks like a 63 year old car. I drive it, it been to Charlotte, Virginia, Detroit, Vermont. It has a homemede interior the original headliner, and floormats. I have attended a lot of shows both locally and national club appearences, It has won everything from honorable mention to Best In Show.

On a regular basis it is usually the 3rd or 4th place car when the ballots are totaled. I go to shows to see other folks and other cars, the Trophies and plaques are nice but not my primary motivator. In fact all of them are tucked away in the garage or basement. (not like some folks who carry their hardware around in their trunks or back seats) So over the years, the paint has aquired some road rash, the stainless could use a polishing, and the underside will be what it is.

My studebaker truck will be a driver deal that will lok presentable from 20 feet away.

Hi Tim. Sorry, but having been to many shows in my car years, Ive not experienced what you are saying. VERY few shows have been anything but on the up and up. I have seen guys irritated because they see a car like thiers that someone has put a lot more time into, and they are embarrased. Yes --I have served as judge at both local and national shows over the last30 years.My only remembrance of a loaded ballot was in a small town and it was so obvious that it became a big source of humor. Lets let the guy who wants his car like new alone and enjoy ALL of them Frank M.

Frank I like a car that is like new just as much as any older vehicle. I was just saying what I like for myself.

I always enjoy looking at an all out restoration with every nut and bolt neatly detailed. I also know when judging a car the differences between the two. I do have friends that can't even look at a car without finding all of its flaws.

I can find the cars flaws, but I'm not looking for that, just enjoying the car and the people who own it.

I agree with you though that we should enjoy all the cars.

Frank..not saying all shows are that way..this particular show I mentioned about the judges meeting, has a lot to do with the local politico..for sure...in that show I was basically an unknown, first year (last) to participate..I got first in class, best of show (peoples choice) and 50.00 door prize..but that metting will always be burnt into my brain as not so "up and up" there were some 50 classes of vehicles including military behicles and that was an interesting class to be sure...I have gotten out of car shows per say..no care to sit and babysit my car...I would rather go as a spectator and look at all the various cars and my favorite is the custom cars as they retain more of the cars features as new on the outside with a few highlights and modern interiors and ammenities..when you set out to put a car back to original..there is no imigination, no creativity..it is a step by step process outlined in a judging guide...however..don't get upset..it takes a lot of of time and money and frustration by the owner to get a car back to restoration, I can say Ihave only done one resto.......my hat is off to any true restoration...my utmost respect to anyone that has taken that course and I truly enjoy seeing a car as it was when new...defines the era like nothing else can unless the shower is dressed in the same period clothes at the event..we NEED all classes..theat is why they exist...but do not mix the classes is my only gripe...

Thanks for the backup Steve. I was beginning to wonder if I was a loner in the Forum. Wife and I have packed up the 47 Chrysler,and been gone for as long as two and a half weeks at a time. Not much room in a convert for stuff,but Landro-mats are all over,so no prob. Also have pulled a car behind the motor ho

me to Iola Old Car Show a lot of the 27 cosecutive years we have attended.

Before the motor home we used a 40 ply coupe the 47 convert and a 48 Chry. club coupe. Either way----It was always fun,and we will continue till the kids stop us. Im 80 now,so that may be not too far off. Frank M.

Hey Jim, a URL is a webpage address. If you have a photo already somewhere on the net, such as photobucket or elsewhere you can enter that URL and it will show the photo on the forum.

If you have the file on your computer, when you go to post reply click the paper clip above the text box. Then you can browse your computer, find the photo in your files, and then attach it.

The Pic are on my computer, I don't see the paper clip, if its next to the mountain it still comes up asking for ULR. I'll get it some day.

Well mine is a garage queen now, but after the total rebuild it will be driven daily and also participating in shows. Trailer queens are a no no as well as ratty looks. No matter how nice my cars are they are still driven. Those "million dollar do not approach kept in aircond garage" builds are for someone else

Fireball; There are a lot of someone elses. Thats their preogative. Its okay for someone to build a car just to keep nice and look at in a air cond. garage just like its okay for you to drive yours,----Doesnt that work. The Trailer Queens dont bother anyone,or shouldnt. Right? Frank M.

Okay Boys, don't make me give you a time out, Frank you would get 80 minutes, based on your age 80 X 1 minute....LOL:D

My goal was not to start a debate over show cars(concourse trailer types) or driver types. My goal was to make a statement, no matter how hard I personally try, I am not gonna be able to make my car a stunning show car, for a number of reasons, lack of skills, lack of money, and lack of time.

My car should have or maybe was bested suited for the scrap pile, I have seen these types get ressurected to fine automobiles again, but a lot of show cars, start out in very decent shape to begin with, and they still take an incredible amount of time and money to perfect.

Because I am doing most of my own work, I have to keep things in perspective, I am not a bodyman, or professional car restorer, this is my 1st kick at the can, things are not bad, but far from great.

I admire those with the skills and no-how, but I am not in this category. I am not into pulling my car completely apart, and going at it like that, too much to absorb for me.

My roof is so bad, it should be cut-off, but I will do the best I can with it. I figure my car will be a 20 footer, but thats okay. I am not hiring out for bodywork, it's not in the cards right now, but I still want to fix up my car, as I am doing, I don't seem to be able to get any help either, the few guys I know who have bodyshop skills, are always too busy to help, and/or give some guidance. I have learned a lot from guys like Tim Adams,Steveplym, and Dezeldoc. Sure am glad this forum is here, as it has helped me a lot.

I know a couple of old Chrysler guys right here in my area, they also are too busy most of the time, seems not to many folks have enough time to get there things done,let alone help anyone else out......................Fred

Like I said, that is not my cup of tea, but I totally accept people who hobby that way, or collect big or whatever. So, it is OK but just not my way. I still after second reading do not see me saying above them bothering me at all... maybe it is this international language barrier, but I only ment them being a no no for me, and for me only. Each to their own and I appreciate anyone who bothers to work on old iron nowadays

Franks original statement in his first response was "and dont understand the feeling I get" and I think the thread has gone a bit beyond..and I tried to explain in my comment that the feeling is the unfair competition of a show car/trailer queen being judge along with driven cars....it is the fact that the distinction of classes are not being made by the sponsors of the show...I have heard many many people make this same observation vocally..thus was just passing the general populace view..I also made the statement that I was glad he had a show car of original condition and the values thereof..however if he thinks it is fair for his show car to be in open judging with driven cars then he is seeking an unfair advantage and the sponsor may allow that..that my friend is the underling resentment you and your car may get...the explaination canot get any more simpler...

I understand what you are saying Tim and I actually agree with it. The only problem is that when you put on a show some people would just unload their car 10 miles away at a lot somewhere in town and drive the car in. That is if you split up the classes. I hate to say that, but I've seen it first hand.

There are a lot of people who have super nice cars and do drive them to all shows. Most shows have a daily driver class, and if you drive your car daily you can enter that class. Be aware though I've seen some cars in the daily driver class that I questioned if they really were driven daily.

I am 71 yrs old or young and have always driven all my cars. I have gotten trophies awards and had cars in 8 different mags but the best part has been you the guys I have meat over the years. I have been helped by so many and been honored to be able to help a few of you. 99% of old car people are what this country should more of. A GREAT BUNCH. You know who you are when I say THANKS for being my friend and sharing part of your life with me.

I take my 47 Plymouth out for a ride every week-end to keep the juices flowing. (20 miles, parkway and street). When I stop at tag sales or the food market, my wife and I get a kick out of people commenting on how nice the car looks, etc. Car is stock except for radials, and homemade floor carpeting. Ed P.

Ed, it is a very nice car, you have what appears as a nice paint job, whitewall tires, looks good.....

This one will likely not ever get to more than driver status.

Probably some minor body work and eventually new paint will be it.

The interior needs some attention at this point as well.

Next thing needed is fix the brakes.....

Bob this car looks pretty straight as it is.

This could be your full race flattie, with that OD trans you got laying on the garage floor, disc brake conversion, dual exhaust, webber 2 bbl carb, HEI igntion. mag wheels.
